Brown Sparks Terps to Track Win

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - DeAnna Brown won the women's 100-meter dash and anchored a first-place 4x100 relay team to lead the Terrapins to a team victory Saturday at the Maryland Invitational track and field meet held at the Kehoe Track Complex.

Brown ran 12.16 seconds to win the 100-meter final over teammate Heidi Paul. She came back to help the Terps to the win in the 4x100 relay in a season-best 47.36.

Maryland scored 230 points to win the women's team competition. UMBC was second with 132 and Mount St. Mary's was third with 125.

Maryland also got individual victories from Ashley Cromartie (1,500 meters), Ashlyn Sinclair (3,000 steeplechase), Amina Smith (high jump), Tara Miluszewski (javelin), Kristin Batts (discus) and Moriah Young (hammer).

Josh Haghighi won the men's shot put for Maryland. The freshman picked up his first outdoor win as a Terp with a mark of 51-2.75. He now has three top-10 finishes this season in the shot.

UMBC won the men's team competition with 169 points, topping Mount St. Mary's (113.5) and Indiana, Pa. (112.5). The Terrapins finished fourth with 89 points despite having a number of student-athletes training through this meet.

Maryland will be off until April 21 through 23 when it competes at Duke in the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Championships.

TERPS NOTES

  • Sumanth Kuppalli had Terps' best mark of season in men's 1,500 with 3:56.37 to place third... Craig Morgan was fourth in 3:58.17 to post season-best.
  • Terps' win in women's 4x100 improved their ECAC-qualifying mark to 47.36.
  • Terps go 1-3 in the women's 1,500. Ashley Cromartie improves season-best mark to 4:38.58, with Ashley Campbell posting 4:45.02 to finish third in her first 1,500 of the season.
  • Amina Smith and Lucile Cancre finish 1-2 in the women's high jump. Smith's win was her second of the outdoor season.
  • Terps get 1-2-3 sweep in the women's hammer, with Moriah Young, Kristen Batts and Jessie Echard in top three spots. Young wins at 172-4.
  • Ashlyn Sinclair wins the women's 3,000 steeplechase in a season-best 10:58.74. Lauren Sumner is third in her steeplechase season-debut at 11:56.30, only the seventh Terp ever to go under 12 minutes in the relatively new event.
  • Corey Puffett takes 40 seconds off his previous season-best to finish third in the men's 5,000. Puffett posts season-best of 15:04.59. Brian Faherty debuts in 5K at 15:14.75.
  • DeAnna Brown leads a 1-2 Maryland finish in the women's 100 with a mark of 12.16 in the final. She went 11.96 in the prelims. Heidi Paul was second at 12.60 after posting 12.45 in the prelims.
  • Tara Miluszewski won the women's javelin with a season-best 128-8. Kristi Person was fifth at 111-5, with her mark moving her into ninth on Maryland's all-time list.
  • Taylor Bumpas led a number of Terps who posted season-bests in the women's 800. Bumpas finished second overall in 2:12.86. Ashley Cromartie (2:14.42), Ariana Tabatabaie (2:15.73), Julie Sinkovitz (2:15.79) and Ashlyn Sinclair (2:18.96) all posted season-bests and finished in the top eight.
  • Sumanth Kuppalli had a season-best 1:55.13 to place third in the men's 800, posting the Terps' best mark of the season in that event.
  • Floyd Hawkes had his best men's 200 mark of the season, being outleaned at the line by Chadwich Brown of Mount St. Mary's by 0.01 seconds. Hawkes went 22.26 to cut a quarter-second off his season-best.
  • Maryland's 4x400 relay team also hit an ECAC-qualifying mark with a second-place finish. Ashley Hendrix, Nicole Banker, DeAnna Brown and Taylor Bumpas ran 3:49.85, which six seconds off their previous season-best.
  • Kristen Batts won the women's discus, the final event of the day, at 157-8. She won by 17 feet and posted her third top-four finish in the discus this outdoor season.
