Former Terp Madieu Williams, a free safety with the Minnesota Vikings, was named the 2010 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Sunday.
Williams, one of three finalists, was recognized for his excellence on the field, as well as extraordinary off-the-field community service, during Super Bowl XLV pregame festivities.
Williams graduated from the University in 2003 with a degree in family science. Prior to joining the NFL, he was a two-year starter (2002-03) for Maryland, helping the Terps win a pair of bowl games.
Williams began his professional football career with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he spent three seasons after being taken in the second round of the 2004 NFL Draft. He joined the Minnesota Vikings in 2008. During the 2010 season, Williams was named the Vikings Community Man of the Year.
He has his own foundation - The Madieu Williams Foundation - which focuses on health, wellness, nutrition, fitness and education for underprivileged youth.
