COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 30th-ranked University of Maryland gymnastics team won all four events in Sunday's meet against No. 26 Kentucky, No. 36 North Carolina and George Washington as the Terps honored their four seniors in their final home meet of 2011. In topping the Tarheels and Colonials, Maryland finished the regular season an undefeated 8-0 in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League standings.
"It was a great night for the seniors to get the win and finish undefeated in the conference," said head coach Brett Nelligan. "That's something we've never done before and I'm so proud of them. It was a tough night and it was hard to compete in back-to-back meets, but they're fighters/ I think it's only going to help us next week at the EAGL Championships."
Abigail Adams won the all-around title with her 39.125 while fellow seniors Jennifer Iovino, Kaitlin Joseph and Kelsey McDermid also contributed in Maryland's four-event victory.
"These four seniors have been such great leaders for us all year," said Nelligan. "For them to come out and get a hard-fought win, that really sums up their character."
The Terps started the meet on vault, where Iovino opened a string of three consecutive scores of 9.725, followed by sophomore Kesley Cofsky and junior Kyra Phillips. Adams notched a 9.750 while sophomore Ally Krikorian and freshman Katy Dodds closed the event out with a 9.825 and 9.800, respectively. Maryland posted a 48.825 on vault as a team to win the first of four events.
Cofsky led Maryland on bars, posting a team-best 9.750. Adams finished in second at 9.700 while Joseph and freshman Elizabethe Manzi tied for third amongst the Terps with a pair of 9.700's.
Adams and Manzi tied for first in the individual title on beam, each scoring a 9.825 to lead Maryland to a meet-best 48.725. Joseph finished in second on the team at 9.750
Maryland closed out its final home meet on floor with all six gymnasts earning 9.525 or higher. Adams clinched a tie for individual honors on the fourth event with her 9.850 while Cofsky and Krikorian tied for second on the team at 9.750.
With the head-to-head wins, Maryland finished undefeated in the conference for the first time ever and will use the momentum heading into confernce championships next weekend.
"Going undefeated gives us confidence," said Nelligan. "We know that we can compete with, and or beat, every team in the conference. We need to go into the EAGL's and compete with that same confidence."
The Terrapins will head just south to Washington, D.C. on Saturday for the EAGL Championships, hosted by George Washington.
