UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Senior Abigail Adams finished third in the all-around competition and the University of Maryland gymnastics team posted its third consecutive score of 195 or better Friday night as the Terps finished second in a tri meet hosted by No. 11 Penn State in University Park, Pa.

The 11th-ranked Nittany Lions won the event with a 197.075 while the Terps, currently ranked No. 31 in the country, earned a 195.125. The Wolfpack of NC State finished in third at 194.625.

"What a gutsy performance for the Terps tonight," said head coach Brett Nelligan. "I'm extremely proud of this team and the heart they show each and every night."

With the head-to-head win over NC State, Maryland remains undefeated in the EAGL conference.

"We wanted to send a message to everyone in the conference that we're the team to beat," said Nelligan.

Maryland started on floor and hit a 48.625, thanks to Adams' 9.875 and sophomore Kesley Cofsky's 9.775. Sophomore Ally Krikorian and senior Kaitlin Joseph pitched in with scores of 9.725 and 9.675, respectively.

On vault, arguably the Terps' strongest event, senior Jennifer Iovino opened with a 9.725 followed by three consecutive plus-9.700 scores from Cofsky, junior Kyra Phillips and Adams. Following her season-best 9.925 on vault last weekend, Krikorian hit a 9.800. Freshman Katy Dodds used a team-best and third-best overall 9.850 to round out Maryland's 48.900.

Adams and Joseph each earned scores of 9.800 o the uneven bars followed by freshman Elizabethe Manzi and Cofsky who both hit with scores of 9.775.

The Terps finished with a season-best 48.725 on balance beam thanks to Adams' season-best-tying 9.875 followed by Cofsky's 9.775.

"Abbey had another great night, and what a performance on beam," said Nelligan. "She stepped up and hit a huge routine for us when we needed it most."

Penn State's Sharaya Musser earned top-honors in the all-around competition with an overall 39.725 while Adams earned third at 39.325. Cofsky was finished just 0.3 points behind Adams in sixth place and second-best for the Terps.

"Kesley is really coming into her own as an all-arounder," said Nelligan. "She looked solid and confident out there tonight."

With a team score of 195.125 Friday night, the Terps have earned scores of 195 or better in three consecutive meets for the first time since 2004.

Maryland will continue conference competition on Mar. 11 when the Terps travel just south to Washington, D.C. to challenge the George Washington Colonials. Nelligan and the Terps will close out the 2010-11 regular season on Mar. 13 for a Senior Day quad meet with Kentucky and EAGL rivals GW and North Carolina.
