COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Nine members of the national champion Maryland field hockey team continued the team's achievements from the 2010 season, as they earned spots on the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association's National Academic Squad announced today.
The Terrapins led all Atlantic Coast Conference teams with nine student-athletes named to the team, while Duke followed with eight.
Lauren Barr, Jemma Buckley, Meghan Dean, Amanda Himmelheber, Danielle Kauffman, Christine Knauss, Alicia Morawski, Janessa Pope and Shelby Sydnor were all honored for their achievements in the classroom. Morawski is a four-time honoree.
Buckley was also named to this year's All-ACC team and Barr was named to the ACC's All-Tournament team.
The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2010-11 academic year.
Last month, Morawski was awarded one of the ACC's James-Weaver-Corrigan awards, a postgraduate scholarship. She is one of 36 student-athletes across all sports that will receive $5,000 to go towards her postgraduate education.
Maryland was named a National Academic Team by the NFHCA. To be named a National Academic Team, squads must earn a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Terrapins are one of 52 Division I teams to earn the honor. Boston College and Duke were also named National Academic teams
