CLEVELAND -Redshirt freshman Danny O'Malley placed second, freshman Jenkins Monzey placed eighth and six other Terps competed in the FILA Junior National Championships last weekend.
"This weekend was a good event that gave our younger guys a chance to compete at a high level," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "I am proud of our guys, especially Danny and Jenkins."
O'Malley, a native of Holbrook, N.Y., strung together three consecutive victories in the 66 kg pound Greco Roman bracket before falling (1-0, 0-2, 3-0) to champion Joseph Locksmith. Picking up national runner-up honors, O'Malley now qualifies for the FILA World Team Trials in May in Franklin, Ind.
In the freestyle bracket, Monzey clinched Fila Junior All-American status after topping Mike Rhone (1-6, 4-0, 3-1). In his true freshman season, Monzey finished 22-11, participating in open competition.
Also competing were Frank Goodwin (66 kg), Danny Orem (70 kg), Eric Beverly (74 kg), Justin Cash (74 kg), Ty Snook (84 kg) and Christian Boley (96 kg). In all, Terrapin Wrestling Club members went 16-14 on the weekend.
The champion in each Olympic weight class in May's team trials will represent the United States at the FILA Junior World Championships in Plaven, Germany in August.
