COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Juniors Kyle John and Corey Peltier were named to the 2010-11 Division I Individual All-Academic wrestling team, the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced today.
“It's very rewarding and exciting for our team to have the academic success tied to these athletic accomplishments,” said head coach Kerry McCoy, who has guided at least one wrestler to the NWCA All-Academic team in each of his three seasons at Maryland.
John, a Civil Engineering major, recently was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Scholar Athlete of the Year and picked up All-ACC honors on the mat after finishing runner-up at the conference championship at 157 pounds. A Coopersburg, Pa., native, John went 31-11 in his junior campaign, including a 15-4 mark in dual bouts.
Peltier, an Education major, earned All-ACC honors after winning the individual conference title at 184 pounds. From Exeter, R.I., Peltier finished the year with a 22-10 record and, like John, was an NCAA qualifier.
In all, 92 individuals representing 44 schools are being honored on this year's All-Academic squad.
As a team, Maryland ranked No. 22 in the country, with a 3.00 GPA. Harvard placed first with a 3.51 GPA while American (3.48) and Columbia (3.29) placed second and third, respectively.
To qualify for the All-Academic team, a wrestler must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, and either been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule- and must have competed in at least 60 percent of said schedule. Those wrestlers who have at least a 3.0 GPA and were an NCAA All-American also qualify for the All-Academic team.
