    COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland softball team (39-18) fell to East Carolina 5-1 Friday night in its opening game of the NCAA Regionals at Robert E. Taylor Stadium despite six strong innings from relief pitcher Kendra Knight.

    After the Pirates took the five-run lead in the top of the first inning, Knight came on and pitched 6.0 innings, giving up just one hit and notching 10 strikeouts.

    East Carolina (40-20) took the early lead with a five-run top of the first. Jordan Lewis hit a three-run homer over the left centerfield wall and two batters later, Jasmine Robbins hit a two-run home run in the same spot.

    Senior Kerry Hickey led with two hits, including two doubles. She put the Terps on the board in the bottom of the first. After junior Vangie Galindo singled up the middle with one out, Hickey hit a double off the left centerfield wall to bring her in.

    Hickey started in the circle for the Terrapins and gave up the Pirates' five runs. She allowed three hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

    Senior Marisha Branson, Galindo and sophomore Nikki Maier each had a hit, as the Terps outhit East Carolina 5-4.

    The Terrapins will play Lehigh (33-22) at 2:30, while 11th-seeded Baylor (41-12) will take on East Carolina at noon. The game one winner will play the losing team in the second game at 5 p.m. Sunday's game will be at noon and if necessary, a second game will be played at 2:30 p.m. Teams playing in those games will be determined upon results of Friday's games.
