Maryland placed eight players on the 2011 USILA Men's Lacrosse All-America teams, which were announced Thursday. Leading the way were seniors Brian Farrell and Brett Schmidt, who earned second team honors as a long pole and defender, respectively.
Senior attackman Ryan Young and junior midfielder Joe Cummings each earned third-team honors. Senior attackman Grant Catalino, sophomore midfielder John Haus, sophomore face-off man Curtis Holmes and senior defender Max Schmidt were honorable mention selections.
The eight All-Americans are the most for the Terps since 2004 when eight Maryland players made the USILA list.
Farrell, a native of Towson, Md., earns his third All-America honor after earning third team honors last season and an honorable mention selection in 2008. He was a dominant force on both ends of the field for the Terps in 2011. Defensively, he finishing the season fifth on the team in groundballs (33) and tied for second in caused turnovers (16), despite missing a game early in the season and being hampered by injuries during the season. On the offensive side for the field Farrell finished with 13 points, which was 10th-best on the team, on seven goals and six assists. For his career Farrell now has 48 points on 28 goals and 20 assists, 166 groundballs and 82 caused turnovers.
Brett Schmidt, a native of Dublin, Pa., earns his second USILA All-America honor after being named to the LaxPower All-America team for the second time earlier this month. Schmidt was a third team honoree in 2010. This season, he led the Terps with 22 caused turnovers and led all defenders with 50 groundballs. Schmidt helped lead a Terrapin defense that finished the season ranked fourth in the nation in scoring defense.
Cummings, a native of Towson, Md., makes his first All-America team after finishing second on the team with 25 goals and fourth in points with 28. Cummings' 25 goals are the most by any full-time Maryland midfielder since first team All-American Bill McGlone scored 26 goals in 2005. Cummings leads all Division I midfielders with a .431 shooting percentage.
Young, a native of Manhasset, N.Y., earns his third USILA All-America selection after being a second team honoree in 2009 and an honorable mention pick in 2010. This season he led the team in points (46) and assists (27), while also serving as the emotional leader of the team. Earlier this season, Young became one of just 11 players in the 86-year history of the Maryland men's lacrosse program to reach the 90-assist plateau for his career. He is currently tied for eighth in career assists with 96 and is 17th on the career points list with 161.
Catalino, a native of Webster, N.Y., earns his third All-America honor after being a third team selection in 2010 and an honorable mention honoree in 2009. This season Catalino leads the Terps with 26 goals and is second in points (36). Catalino scored the game-winning goal in overtime vs. No. 1 seed Syracuse on May 22 to send the Terps to their first Final Four since 2006. Overall, Catalino is one of just 12 Terps in the 86-year history of the men's lacrosse program to reach to 100-goal plateau for his career. He is currently eighth on the all-time goals list with 114 and is 14th all-time at Maryland with 179 career points.
Haus, who hails from Chapel Hill, N.C., is the first North Carolina native to earn All-American honors as a Terp. He has followed up a terrific freshman campaign, which saw him become the first Terp freshman to score 10 or more goals 1997, with a sensational sophomore season. He is currently fifth on the team with 25 points on 13 goals and 12 assists, which is tied for second on the team. Haus has also improved his defense and has 16 groundballs and seven caused turnovers.
Holmes, a native of Marriottsville, Md., has emerged as one of the top face-off men in the country and has produced one of the best seasons ever by a Maryland face-off man. He currently ranks seventh in the NCAA in face-off percentage (.625) and is also among the nation's leaders in groundballs per game (4.38). Holmes' 2011 season ranks as the second-best ever at Maryland. His 199 wins and 317 draws are second only to Andy Claxton, who won 214 of 334 face-offs in 1991.
Max Schmidt, a native of Upper Arlington, Ohio, earns his third All-America honor after being an honorable mention selection in 2010 and a third team honoree in 2009. This season, Schmidt is seventh on the team in groundballs (31) and is tied for second in caused turnovers (16). Schmidt helped lead a Terrapin defense that finished the season ranked fourth in the nation in scoring defense.
The Terps face No. 5 seed Duke Saturday, May 28, in the Final Four in Baltimore. The Terps/Blue Devils match-up will be the second game of the Saturday doubleheader that features No. 6 Denver meeting No. 7 Virginia in the first game at 4 p.m.
