Ex-Terp Coach Torpey Dies of Heart Attack

PHILADELPHIA - Former University of Maryland head track and field coach Charles Torpey died recently of a heart attack at age 58. Most recently, he was the head coach at La Salle University.
"Charles left a lasting legacy everywhere he coached," said current Maryland head coach Andrew Valmon. "He will be greatly missed by all those who he mentored"
He coached 13 individual champions in the Atlantic Coast Conference while coaching he Terrapins from 1981-88. He also coached 12 All-Americans during his time in College Park.
He was the head coach of cross country and track and field at La Salle for 17 seasons.
