PINEHURST, N.C. - The University of Maryland football team moved closer to the start of the 2011 season when head coach Randy Edsall, quarterback Danny O'Brien and linebacker Kenny Tate represented the team at the annual ACC Football Kickoff.
Edsall, O'Brien and Tate spent Sunday and Monday in Pinehurst, N.C., talking to local, regional and national media about the upcoming season. The Terps play their opener on Monday, Sept. 5 against Miami at 8 p.m.
O'Brien, the 2010 ACC Rookie of the Year, finished fifth in balloting for preseason Player of the Year with four votes. Boston College running back Montel Harris was the popular pick with 26 votes, followed by Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel (14), Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly (12) and Virginia Tech running back David Wilson (8).
ACC media members in attendance also chose Florida State as the consensus pick to win the ACC Championship. The Seminoles, who received 65 of 71 votes to win the Atlantic Division, were followed by Clemson (4), NC State, Boston College (2), Maryland and Wake Forest.
The Terps have been picked anywhere from second to fifth in preseason predictions: The Sporting News picked Maryland second, Lindy's and Athlon picked the Terps to finish third, while Blue Ribbon also had Maryland finishing fifth in the Atlantic Division.
In the Coastal Division, Virginia Tech was picked as the likely champion, followed by Miami, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Virginia and Duke.
