COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
Maryland women's basketball senior Lynetta Kizer (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac High School) is one of 14 of the nation's top college players at the U.S. Olympic Training Center for the final week of training for USA Basketball's World University team.
The final 12-member roster will be announced before the team departs for Shenzhen, China, on Aug. 8, to compete in the 2011 World University Games. Team USA, who will be defending its 2009 gold medal, has been slotted into Group B, along with Great Britain, Slovakia and Brazil.
The USA will train in China Aug. 10-13, and will open up competition Aug. 14 vs. Brazil at 10 a.m. (all times EDT). The USA will then play Slovakia at 10 a.m. on Aug. 15 and Great Britain at 6 a.m. on Aug. 16. Quarterfinals action begins on Aug. 18, with the semifinals and finals on Aug. 19 and 21, respectively.
The other 13 finalists for spots on the 2011 USA World University Games Team are: Elena Delle Donne (Delaware/Wilmington, Del.); Skylar Diggins (Notre Dame/South Bend, Ind.); Jacki Gemelos (USC/Stockton, Calif.); Keisha Hampton (DePaul/Philadelphia, Pa.); Glory Johnson (Knoxville, Tenn./Tennessee); Shenise Johnson (Miami/Henrietta, N.Y.); Natalie Novosel (Notre Dame/Lexington, Ky.); Chiney Ogwumike (Stanford/Cypress, Texas); Nnemkadi Ogwumike (Stanford/Cypress, Texas); Devereaux Peters (Notre Dame/Chicago, Ill.); Odyssey Sims (Baylor/Irving, Texas); Shekinna Stricklen (Tennessee/Morrilton, Ark.); and April Sykes (Rutgers/Starkville, Miss.).
Kizer helped the USA earned its 2009 U19 World Championship berth with a gold medal finish at the 2008 FIBA Americas U18 Championship, which was played in Argentina. In the last Youth Development Festival organized by USA Basketball in 2007, Kizer helped lead the USA White Team to a 3-0 record and gold-medal finish.
