COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland football team had its third two-a-day of the preseason on Friday, completing an early morning workout along with an afternoon session at the on-campus practice facility.
The Terps have now completed 13 of the 29 practices scheduled prior to the season opener vs. Miami, which is just a little more than two weeks away. As Maryland nears the midway point of camp, head coach Randy Edsall spoke to the importance of grinding through what is a challenging stretch.
"I told them at the beginning of the week, that this is going to be a difficult week," said Edsall after this morning's workout. "But this is where you find out about your team. You find out about your leadership. As tough as it may be, they have to have that will to win every time they come out here. That's the mindset I want to create."
With Maryland conducting its second two-a-day in the last 72 hours, Edsall gave some players the morning session off, presenting an opportunity for members of the second team hoping to make a positive impression.
"I rested a couple of guys today. What I wanted to be able to do was see some of these other guys get in with the first team and see how they would react and evaluate them. Hopefully [injuries] don't happen during the season but if they do some guys have to step up into roles they might not have been in before."
One position group Edsall has spoken highly of throughout preseason camp is the running backs. Behind senior Davin Meggett, sophomore D.J. Adams and redshirt freshman Jeremiah Wilson, who switched from defensive back in the spring, are true freshmen Justus Pickett and Brandon Ross.
"I've been extremely impressed with those two young men and really like what I've seen out of them," Edsall said of Pickett and Ross. "Hopefully they can continue it."
Edsall also mentioned place-kicker Nick Ferrara as one who has excelled in camp. Ferrara, a freshman All-American in 2009, nailed all five of his field-goal attempts during drills in the morning session, including a 50-plus yarder.
"He's kicked the ball well," Edsall said. "I want to put these guys in position where there is pressure on them, not always at the end but also during practice. He's been very consistent. He's had a very good preseason so far."
On Saturday Maryland will hold a morning practice at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium which is open to fans before using the afternoon to move out of the dorms and into their permanent residences. Players and coaches have been living on campus since reporting for camp on Aug. 8.
After that, the Terps will hold a game-like scrimmage Sunday evening, which Edsall hopes will provide some clarity on personnel in the depth chart.
"We'll scrimmage Sunday night and then come out and have a better idea [of the depth chart]. I want to treat Sunday night like a normal game where we're going to rotate defensive linemen, we're going to rotate the people in we feel [we need to]. It gives us a chance to be in the press box. We'll have another scrimmage [next week] but it won't be as long as Sunday night. This way the kids get a chance to say `this is how it's going to go.'"
