COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Two days away from the end of fall camp, the Maryland football team held a two-hour workout at the on-campus practice facility Wednesday evening.
The Terps, who are scheduled to work out again Thursday morning, will scrimmage for the final time Friday night before delving completely into preparation for their Labor Day matchup with Miami.
Maryland held a game-like scrimmage Sunday evening that head coach Randy Edsall said helped determine what the two-deep will look like, though he and his staff will use the final two days of fall camp to help make some final decisions.
"The scrimmage was good," said Edsall. "We got probably 120 plays in and gave everybody an opportunity to get in there and perform and came out of it healthy. Hopefully here after two more practices then we'll have a firm depth chart in place.
"The defense was better in this last scrimmage than it was in the first," said Edsall. "There are some guys that have moved up in the depth chart but we're still trying to figure out who some of the backup safeties are going to be; in terms of the receiver rotation who is going to be in that; and then also at the Star position, the backups there. But mostly the same guys are where they were heading into [Sunday's] scrimmage."
In addition to evaluating the two-deep, Edsall said he has a better idea of which freshmen might be ready to contribute right away.
"I think we have a better handle on the freshmen that I think will have a chance to contribute. But again we still have tomorrow, and Friday we'll do some scrimmaging, and then that'll really be it and we'll be able to put a two-deep together."
One freshman that could be in the mix for playing time is defensive back Jeremiah Johnson. The 5-foot-11, Forestville, Md., native has seen extensive time in camp with sophomore Dexter McDougle dinged up. Though McDougle has returned to practice, Johnson made the most of his opportunity, Edsall said.
"With Dexter being hurt it's allowed Jeremiah to get a lot of repetitions and work in case he is the starter or if he's the backup and has to go in. He took advantage of the opportunity when Dexter couldn't be out there."
After scrimmaging Friday, the Terps will practice Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before taking a day off when classes begin next Wednesday. Following the off day, just four practices will remain before the showdown with Miami, which will kickoff at 8 p.m. in Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium on Sept. 5.
