COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland volleyball team opens its 2011 home slate at Comcast Pavilion against Virginia Commonwealth Friday night at 7 p.m. as part of the Courtyard by Marriott Maryland Invitational. Prior to the Maryland match, Xavier and Quinnipiac face off at 4:30 p.m.
Despite dropping three tough matches last weekend in Knoxville, Tenn., the Terps (0-3) had several standout performances.
Junior Caitlin Adams, a transfer from Texas A&M, made her Maryland debut, and was named to the Comcast Lady Vol Classic All-Tournament Team. Adams finished the event 29 kills, 14 digs, 10 blocks and a team-leading .426 attack percentage.
Fellow junior Remy McBain notched her second career triple-double against Ohio on Saturday. Against the Bobcats, McBain recorded 10 kills, 38 assists and 11 digs. The preseason All-ACC selection ranks sixth in the conference in digs per set (7.93).
Sophomore Sarah Harper turned in a solid defensive effort over the three matches. Harper recorded 57 digs, including a career-high 24 against Tennessee. The defensive specialist is fourth in the ACC in digs per set, and her total of 57 is second-best in the conference.
The Courtyard by Marriott Maryland Invitational runs through Saturday. The first match on Saturday begins at 10 a.m. The event concludes with the Terps taking on Xavier at 7 p.m.

Quinnipiac

The Bobcats are 0-3 after falling to Cal. State-Fullerton, 3-0, in the final match of the Loyola Marymount Invitational. Quinnipiac opened the season with a loss to UCLA, 3-0, and a loss to Loyola Marymount, 3-0.
Offensively, Quinnipiac is led by senior Kelby Carey who averaged 2.15 kills per set last season. Senior Kayla Lawler will setup Carey. Lawler led the team in 2011 with 8.86 assists per set.
Defensively, junior libero Logan Riker racked up 829 digs in her first two seasons at the school, compiling at least 400 in each of her first two years.
VCU

VCU is 1-2 this season. The Rams traveled to West Lafayette, Ind., for the Mortar Board Premier last weekend. VCU opened up the season with a 3-1 victory over College of Charleston, but dropped the next two matches to Purdue and Baylor, 3-0.
Seniors Courtney Hott and Jessica Ojukwu lead the attack for the Rams. Hott and Ojukwu combined for 309 kills last season. They will be looking for sophomore Ciara Brown to provide the assists. Brown recorded 794 assists in 2010.
Junior Marisa Low totaled 475 digs last season and will be called upon to stifle opposing offenses.
Xavier

Xavier enters the Courtyard by Marriott Maryland Invitational at 2-1 following a loss to Houston at the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup. The Musketeers won the first two matches of the invitational defeating Lipscomb and Central Arkansas, 3-0.
Xavier is led by All-Conference selections Michelle Matia and Stephanie Vorheer. Matia, a senior middle blocker, recorded a team-best 98 blocks a year ago, along with 180 kills, while junior defensive specialist Vorherr, named the league's 2010 Libero of the Year and an AVCA All-America honorable mention, posted a league-high 603 digs.
