COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Terps closed out the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Terrapin Invitational with a victory against Delaware, 3-1, Saturday evening. Junior Caitlin Adams and senior Maddi Lee were named to the all-tournament team as Maryland won two of their three tournament matches. The Terrapins fell to Sacred Heart, 3-2, in their second match of the invitational.
Adams (.338) and Lee (.315) finished the tournament one and two in attack percentage, respectively, and both tallied 35 kills over the three matches which tied for second.
Against the Blue Hens, Adams converted 45 percent of attack opportunities to finish with 11 kills. Junior Remy McBain and freshman Ashleigh Crutcher recorded double-doubles, and sophomore Mary Cushman and Lee had 14 and 10 kills, respectively.
The Terps did not enjoy a lead larger than four points during the first set against Delaware. After the Blue Hens cut the Maryland lead to 23-21, sophomore Sarah Harper set up McBain for one of her 10 kills and Cushman followed with a kill to secure the set for the Terrapins.
Maryland took control of the second set midway through. Lee sparked a 9-0 Maryland run which was punctuated by a block by freshman Adreene Elliott. Elliott finished the match with seven blocks as the Terrapins won the second set, 25-14.
In the third set, Delaware successfully defended four Terrapin set points and scored the final six points of the set to win it, 26-24.
Consecutive Delaware blocks cut the Maryland lead to 23-20 in the fourth set. Adams answered with a kill, but the Blue Hens scored consecutive kills to cut the Terrapin lead to two. However, McBain would close out the match with a kill for the second night in a row.
Despite losing to Sacred Heart in the afternoon session, the Terps turned in a strong defensive effort. Maryland recorded 20 blocks, which was one shy of a single-game school record. Adams led the way with 12, three solo and nine assists, and Crutcher and Elliott each finished with five.
The Terps will head to Columbus, Ohio, Friday for the Sports Imports Classic. Maryland will face Akron Friday at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Terrapins match up with Albany and Ohio State.
