Final Stats

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Led by a strong offensive effort from sophomore Mary Cushman and senior Maddi Lee, the Maryland volleyball team defeated Akron, 3-0, in its opening match of the Sports Imports Classic Friday. The Terps (6-4) will conclude the event Saturday with matches against Albany at 1 p.m. and No. 25 Ohio State at 7 p.m.

Maryland recorded 49 kills, a season high for a 3-set match. Cushman led the Terps with 13 kills and Lee hit a career-best .647, finishing with 11 kills. Junior Remy McBain finished with 35 assists and added seven kills. Sophomore Sarah Harper tallied 25 digs, two shy of her career high.

With the first set tied at 17, freshman Adreene Elliott capped a quick 3-0 Maryland run with a kill to give the Terps some breathing room. The Terps earned set point following an Akron error and McBain set up Cushman for the kill to secure the set for the Terrapins, 25-20.

Maryland rallied from a four-point deficit to take an 11-10 lead midway through the second set. The match remained close until Lee finished off a three-point run by the Terps with a kill to give Maryland an 18-14 advantage. With the Terps holding set point at 24-20, Harper set up Lee for the clinching kill.

The Terrapins raced out to a 7-2 lead in the third set and never allowed the Zips to get closer than three points in route to winning the final set, 25-21.
