Maryland Men, Women Place Second at Mount

EMMITSBURG, Md. - The University of Maryland men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2011 seasons with second-place finishes Friday at the Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals.

The Maryland men went 4-1-1 against their six opponents, losing to American (6-0) and tying UMBC (also 4-1-1). Maryland beat the Mount, Navy, St. Bonaventure and George Washington.

Sophomore Sean O'Leary was sixth overall, finishing in 15:37.3 and cutting 20 seconds off his time on the Mount course from last year. Freshman Tyler Stump also got a top-10 finish, placing eighth overall at 15:38.5.

Maryland also scored with junior Craig Morgan (11th, 15:42.6), freshman Alex Willett (13th, 15:43.4) and freshman Nick Regan (16th, 15:45.2).

American swept the top three spots in the men's race, with Mark Allen (15:25.6), Mark Leininger (15:26.0) and John Pope (15:28.7) pacing the field.

The Maryland women went 5-1 against their six opponents in the event, which was scored as dual meets against each opponent. The Terrapins' only loss was a 28-29 loss to American University, which won the women's team competition.

The Terps beat George Mason, UMBC, host Mount St. Mary's, St. Bonaventure and George Washington on the women's side.

Individually, junior Anna Roth finished third to pace the Terrapins. She covered the 5K course in 18 minutes, 24.9 seconds, cutting nearly three minutes from her time over the same course from last year. Freshman Myah Hicks was fourth overall in 18:34.6.

Also scoring for the Maryland women were senior Halsey Sinclair (11th, 19:20.0), freshman Michelle Hess (12th, 19:21.7) and sophomore Julie Sinkovitz (19.31.4).

Octavia Rinehardt of American won the women's race in 18:03.0, with Rochelle Sceats of George Mason in second at 18:16.8.

Maryland competes next on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Navy Invitational.
