Freshman Ashleigh Crutcher established new career highs in kills and attack percentage to lead Maryland over VCU, 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-16), in its opening match of the Courtyard by Marriott Maryland Invitational Friday evening. Senior Maddi Lee joined Cructher in setting a new career mark in attack percentage.
The Terrapins (1-3) converted close to 39 percent of its attack opportunities, including an astounding 46 percent in the second set. Crutcher finished the match with 13 kills and chipped in 7 digs. Lee and sophomore Mary Cushman recorded 11 kills apiece.
Junior setter Remy McBain assumed her usual role of setting up the attack. McBain finished with 36 assists, and added seven kills.
Maryland turned in a team effort defensively with every participating player recording a dig. The Terps totaled 42 digs, led by sophomore Sarah Harper's 10. For the second time this season, freshman Adreene Elliott led the Terrapins in blocks with four.
The two teams traded points for most of the first set. With VCU leading the set, 20-19, the Terps scored the final six points capped by Crutcher blocking a Rams attack.
The Terps scored nine of the first 11 points in the second set and cruised to a 25-14 win.
In the third set, VCU cut Maryland's lead to 14-10, before McBain and Lee spurred a 4-0 run with back-to-back kills to help the Terps finish the match.
The Courtyard by Marriott Maryland Invitational continues tomorrow with the Terps taking on Quinnipiac at 12:30 p.m., and the Musketeers of Xavier at 7 p.m. VCU and Xavier meet at 10 a.m. to kick off the Saturday session, and Quinnipiac faces VCU at 4:30 p.m.
