The Maryland volleyball team dropped its first conference match of the season as North Carolina converted 34 percent of its attack opportunities to win the match, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 26-16). The Terps (7-7, 1-1) will look to rebound against the N.C. State Wolfpack Sunday at 2 p.m. in Comcast Pavilion.
Freshman Adreene Elliott recorded a career-high .615 attack percentage to finish with eight kills and pace the Terps attack. Sophomore Mary Cushman tallied seven kills and junior Caitlin Adams chipped in with six.
Junior Remy McBain continued to add to her career assist total finishing with 25 while adding four kills and five digs. Sophomore Sarah Harper led Maryland with 12 digs.
The Tar Heels' attack hit their stride early. North Carolina hit .406 in the first set en route to an opening set victory. UNC's Cameron Van Noy and Emily McGee combined for nine kills in the frame. Following an ace by Harper which cut the Tar Heel lead to 18-15, McGee answered with a kill and North Carolina went on to win, 25-19.
The Terps responded at the beginning of the second set. McBain opened the set with an ace and freshman Ashleigh Crutcher and Adams added kills as the Terps took a 6-1 lead. UNC steadily chipped away at the lead before tying the set at 15 on an Erica Behm kill. With a 23-21 lead, UNC's Chaniel Nelson gave the Tar Heels set point with a kill. The Terps fought off the first set point with Elliott's seventh kill of the game; however, UNC went on to win the set 25-22 on a Maryland service error.
North Carolina's Chaniel Nelson sparked a three-point spurt with one of her five kills in the set to stretch the Tar Heel lead to 18-10. The Terps would close the gap to six points on a Cushman kill to cut the UNC lead to 21-15, but the Terrapins would not get any closer as UNC's Kayla Berringer tallied a kill to give the Tar Heels match point, and following a Maryland attacking error, the win.
