The Maryland volleyball team defeated Xavier and Quinnipiac, 3-0, Saturday to capture the championship of the Courtyard by Marriott Maryland Invitational. With the 3-0 defeat of VCU Friday night, the Terps (3-3) did not drop a set over the three matches.
Freshman Ashleigh Crutcher received tournament MVP honors. Junior Remy McBain and senior Maddi Lee joined Crutcher on the all-tournament team. Crutcher led the tournament in kills (33), while McBain (.586) and Lee (.418) ranked one and two in attack percentage, respectively.
The Terps and Xavier entered the final match of the tournament with the championship on the line. McBain tallied a double-double with 31 assists and 14 digs. Crutcher, 11 kills, and sophomore Mary Cushman, 10 kills, led the Maryland attack, while sophomore Sarah Harper recorded 20 of her tournament-high 42 digs.
Maryland started off the match impressively scoring 11 of the first 12 points. The Musketeers battled back and cut the lead to two points on several occasions, but a McBain kill finished off the first set, 25-22.
In the second set, the Terrapins fought back from a 7-2 deficit to even the score at 10. Maryland would not enjoy a lead larger than three for the rest of the set. A service ace by Harper gave the Terps set point, and a service error by Xavier closed out the set, 25-22.
Xavier led for the majority of the third set. With the Musketeers leading 21-15, the Terps scored five straight points to cut the lead to one. A kill from McBain gave the Terps set point, but a kill from Xavier redshirt sophomore Alex Smith tied the set at 24. Following a kill by Crutcher, McBain and freshman Adreene Elliott teamed up to block a Xavier attack attempt to close out the match.
In the afternoon session, Crutcher, who totaled a match-high nine kills, capped a 6-0 Maryland run early in the first set with a kill to extend the Terps' lead to 12-4. The Terrapins would use another 6-0 run to pull away from the Bobcats late in the set, and go on to win, 25-12.
Maryland overcame a slow start in the second set and drew even with the Bobcats at 13. Freshman Katie Kelley finished a five-point spurt for the Terps with an ace, and Maryland went on to win the set, 25-20.
In the third set, Lee totaled four kills and freshman Carlisle Abele recorded the first three kills of her career to help the Terps score 12 of the final 15 points of the match to win the set 25-13.
