COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior Remy McBain tallied her third career triple-double and freshman Adreene Elliott had a career-high 17 kills as the Maryland volleyball team defeated the Virginia Cavaliers, 3-2 (24-26, 25-16, 22-25, 25-23, 15-13) Friday night. The Terps overcame sizeable deficits in the fourth and fifth sets to come back and defeat the Cavaliers.

Several Terps set career marks during the match. McBain set career-highs in kills (11) and digs (21), finished with 55 assists, one shy of her career mark, and added five service aces. Elliott, named ACC Freshman of the Week for her performance in three conference matches last week, continued her strong play with 17 kills on a .433 hitting percentage. Sophomore Caroline Niski set a career-best 19 digs and added five kills on a team-high .444 hitting percentage. Sophomore Mary Cushman recorded a double-double, tying a career high with 18 kills and tallying 14 digs.

The Cavaliers opened up a four point lead at 22-18 in the first set following a kill by Virginia's Hillary Trebels. Three straight Maryland points capped by an Elliott kill cut the Virginia lead to one. After the Cavaliers earned set point at 24-22, the Terps fought off two set points with an Elliott kill and Cushman service ace. Virginia's Jessica O'Shoney set up another Cavs set point with a kill and closed the set out with a service ace.

The Terps raced out to a 10-3 advantage in the second set behind two McBain service aces. Virginia would cut the lead to 10-8, but the Terps scored six straight points capped by a McBain kill. The Cavaliers would never get closer than four points during the remainder of the set as the Terrapins scored the final five points of the set to win, 25-16.

Maryland scored the first five points of the third set, but Virginia rallied to eventually tie the set at 18. With Virginia leading 20-19, the Cavaliers got two service aces from Emily Rottman to grow the lead to 23-19. Virginia would go on to win the set 25-22.

The Terps would trail by as much as four points at several periods during the fourth set. With Virginia leading 20-16, Maryland battled to tie the score at 21 behind kills from Cushman, junior Caitlin Adams and Elliott. The Cavaliers took a 23-22 lead following a Maryland error, but Elliott struck with a kill, McBain recorded a service ace and freshman Carlisle Abele blocked a Cavalier attack to finish the set.

The Cavaliers edged out to a five-point advantage at 12-7 in the fifth set. The Terps would score eight of the next nine points finished off by two Cushman kills to secure the victory.
