Danny O'Brien threw for 239 yards and a touchdown and Joe Vellano scooped up a fumble and ran for a 30-yard TD to help Maryland take a 20-14 lead over Miami into halftime.
Notes from the first half
Kicking Off: Maryland is 8-8 all-time against Miami, and the Terps are 2-0 against the Hurricanes at Byrd Stadium...This marks the first time the Terps have faced Miami to open the season...The Terps have won six of their last seven season openers and are 72-44-2 all-time.
First Impression: Maryland scored on its first possession of the season. Quarterback Danny O'Brien capped the 79-yard scoring drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Ronnie Tyler. O'Brien completed six of his seven passes for 72 yards on the drive.
Early Playing Time: Keith Bowers, Tyler Cierski and Justus Pickett became the first true freshmen to record playing time since Davin Meggett in 2008.
Two Step: Joe Vellano scooped up two fumbles in the first half, the second of which resulted in a 30-yard touchdown return, the first touchdown of Vellano's career...
Offensive Attack: The Terps racked up 311 yards of total offense in the first half compared to 189 for Miami. O'Brien went 22-of-30 for 239 yards, a TD and an interception. Wide receivers Kevin Dorsey (6 catches, 62 yards) and Quintin McCree (6 catches, 42 yards) and tight end Matt Furstenburg (4 catches, 68 yards) led the way on the receiving end. Running back Davin Meggett also chipped in 55 yards rushing.
