The Maryland volleyball team overcame a 2-0 deficit and rallied to defeat the Yale Bulldogs, 3-2, in the second game of the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Terrapin Invitational Friday. The Terps are looking for their second consecutive tournament championship and will take on Sacred Heart and Delaware tomorrow.
Junior Remy McBain set a new career high in assists and recorded her second triple-double of the season. McBain finished with 10 kills, 56 assists and 14 digs, and added four blocks.
Fresh off being recognized as the ACC Freshman of the Week, Ashleigh Crutcher tallied a double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs, and senior Maddi Lee continued to strike the ball well converting 33 percent of her attack opportunities (15 kills).
Yale controlled the first set and raced out to a 12-4 advantage. The Terps would cut the lead to five at 14-9. However, the Bulldogs scored the next four points and went on to win the set, 25-16.
In the second set with the score tied at 14, the two teams traded points before the Terrapins edged out a 24-20 advantage. Yale would score five in a row, but sophomore Mary Cushman tied the set at 25. The Bulldogs would fight-off three set points before taking the set, 31-29.
Maryland led late in the third set, 20-17. Following a service error by Yale, junior Caitlin Adams added a kill as the Terps scored five of the next seven points. Crutcher and Lee tallied back-to-back kills to clinch the set for the Terrapins, 25-19.
The Terps used a four-point run to take a 17-15 lead in the fourth set. After Yale came back to lead 24-23, Adams and Lee each added a kill in succession to give Maryland the advantage. On set point, the Bulldogs committed an error to secure the set for the Terps.
In the fifth set, following a Yale timeout, the Bulldogs scored six of the next seven points to even the score at 12. The set remained tight and with the score tied at 16, Lee converted a McBain assist to bring the game to match point. McBain closed out the match with a quick strike off of a set from freshman Katie Kelley.
The tournament continues Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Maryland takes the court at 12:30 p.m. against Sacred Heart and closes out the invitational against Delaware at 7 p.m.
