Friday evening at Comcast Pavilion, the Maryland volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Miami (26-24, 26-24, 25-17). In the loss, freshman Mackenzie Dagostino tied a career high with 35 assists and totaled a personal-best six kills.
Senior Remy McBain led the Terps (10-9, 2-6 ACC) with 11 kills and added four assists and six digs. Sophomore Adreené Elliott continued her efficient hitting with nine kills on .444 hitting.
The opening set featured 14 kills and lead changes. The Maryland offense was paced by Elliott with seven kills and four from McBain. The Terps earned a 10-6 lead early in the set with a 5-2 spurt behind three kills from Elliott. The Hurricanes slowly chipped away at the lead and eventually tied at 14 following a Terrapin attacking error.
The two teams stayed within touching distance of each other for the remainder of the set. Dagostino and Elliott combined on a block to give the Terps set point at 24-23, but a kill from the Hurricanes' Taylor Hollins tied it on the next point. Miami added two more kills to take the opening set.
The second set went back and forth and featured runs by both clubs. Sophomore Carlisle Abele and McBain each totaled five kills during the set while sophomore Ashleigh Crutcher added two blocks.
The Canes jumped out to a 5-1 lead before the Terps mounted an 8-1 run to take the lead by three. Maryland stretched its lead to 16-12 before Miami called a timeout. The Hurricanes seized the momentum out of the break and trimmed the Terrapin lead to one at 18-17.
After a timeout, Abele tallied three kills to help increase the lead to 23-19. But Miami had one run left in it and scored seven of the final eight points to earn a 2-0 lead.
After intermission, Miami went up 7-3 early and increased the advantage to five points before Maryland called a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Hurricanes continued to apply the pressure and grew its lead to eight points at 21-13. The Canes went on to win the set 25-17.
The Terps are back in action Sunday against No. 12 Florida State. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
