Student-Athletes Attend Financial Literacy Presentation

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Leo Tucker, Managing Partner of the DC/VA Northwestern Mutual office spoke to Maryland student-athletes about the importance of financial literacy on Oct. 15 at the Glazer Auditorium in the Gossett Football Team House.
Tucker, a financial expert, caught the attention of all student-athletes in attendance when he told them that they all had the capacity to become a millionaire. The purpose of his presentation was to educate the audience about money matters but to also provide a simple approach to financial literacy and the pitfalls of accrued debt.
Football standout Bennet Fulper appreciated Tucker's hands-on approach to money and finance as he "made it simple for those of us who are not business majors".
Tucker was quick to differentiate between good debt, such as a home mortgage, and bad debt like credit card expenses. He also emphasized good spending habits and how critical it was for young people to earn an "MBA" - Massive Bank Account. "
The intimate atmosphere allowed for those in attendance to interact directly with Mr. Tucker" said John Davenport, member of the men's track and field team.
The next Student Welfare & Career Development (SWCD) event is entitled "Refocusing our Legacy 1 Cause, 1 Goal" and will be held on Monday) October 22, 2012. Featured panelists will include Washington Redskins defensive back Josh Wilson; President of the National Football League Players Association, Domonique Foxworth; Dean of the Clark School of Engineering, Dr. Darryl Pines, and Assistant Vice Preseident of UMD Student Affairs, Dr. Warren Kelley.
