Behind three RBI from junior Kyle Convissar and a strong relief performance from redshirt freshman Robert Galligan, Team Szefc defeated Team Vaughn, 7-5, to win Game 1 of the Fall World Series Saturday morning at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
Convissar singled home two runs in the top of the sixth inning to put Team Szefc on top for good. The Severna Park, Md., native finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Galligan entered in the bottom of the fourth inning in relief of senior Jimmy Reed and pitched two innings of one run baseball to earn the win.
Team Vaughn was led by a trio of freshmen. Kyle Moore went 3-for-5 with one run scored and two RBI, while Brandon Lowe had two hits and a RBI and Kevin Martir drove in two runs on one hit.
Team Vaughn opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Tim Kiene doubled to left field following a ground out by junior Michael Montville. Moore followed with a double off the left field wall plating Kiene.
After a single by Lowe advanced Moore to third base, Martir singled to left center to put Team Vaughn up 2-0.
Team Szefc responded with two runs in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI single from senior Jack Cleary and sacrifice from sophomore Andrew Amaro. In the sixth inning, Team Szefc opened it up. With the bases loaded, Convissar singled to left field plating Amaro and Ramsay. Sophomore Anthony Papio drew a walk to force home a run and Ramsay finished off the scoring for the inning with a RBI single up the middle scoring Convissar.
Junior LaMonte Wade Jr. combined to only give up one earned run in 2-1/3 innings of relief. Junior Jake Stinnett came on in the ninth inning to close it out and earn the save.
Galligan earned the win, while freshman Sam Carmack took the loss.
Game 2 of the Fall World Series will be played tomorrow at 4:15 p.m. at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
