Terps Finish Home Schedule This Weekend

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland volleyball team wraps up its regular season home schedule this weekend as Duke and Wake Forest come to Comcast Pavilion.

The Terps and Demon Deacons are set for a 7 p.m. first serve on Friday. Maryland faces Duke on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Sunday's match against the Blue Devils marks the final home match for two Terrapins. Seniors Caitlin Adams and Remy McBain will play their final match at Comcast Pavilion. The two seniors will be recognized and honored beforehand.

Last Time Out

Ashleigh Crutcher totaled a career-high 28 kills, but Clemson withstood the onslaught and knocked off the Terps in five sets on Sunday.

Friday night, Crutcher and Mary Cushman each knocked down 20 kills to lead the Terps past Georgia Tech in five sets.


What's Next

The Terps close the regular season with a five-match road trip starting in the state of Virginia. Maryland takes on Virginia Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. The following evening, the Terps and Virginia Tech face off at 6 p.m.

Scouting the Terps

2012 Maryland Terrapins: 12-13, 3-10 ACC

The Terps enter the weekend averaging 13.49 kills per set and 12.47 assists per set, both of which rank fifth in the conference. Maryland is converting 21.8 percent of its attack opportunities, the seventh-highest total in the league, and is holding opponents to .210 hitting.

Following her performance last weekend, Ashleigh Crutcher moved into second in the ACC with a 3.84 kills per set average in league matches. Crutcher has been aided by the return of Mary Cushman. In the past three matches, Cushman is averaging 3.54 kills per set.

Adreené Elliott continues to provide a strong offensive presence at middle blocker. Elliott is fifth in the ACC and 26th nationally in hitting percentage (.383). Defensively, Elliott leads the team in total blocks (92) and is averaging 1.01 per set.

Mackenzie Dagostino and Remy McBain continue to share setting duty for the Terps. Dagostino is averaging 5.86 assists per set, while McBain is averaging 5.53.

At libero, Amy Dion has started the last three matches and is averaging 4.85 digs per set. Sarah Harper leads the team in digs with 320. Harper is averaging 3.56 per set, which ranks 10th in the conference.


Scouting the Demon Deacons

2012 Wake Forest Demon Deacons: 9-16, 3-10 ACC
Roster Schedule Statistics

The Deacs split a weekend series at home against NC State and North Carolina last week. Friday night, Wake Forest knocked off NC State in five sets before losing to the Tar Heels 3-0 on Sunday.

The Demon Deacons rank towards the bottom of the ACC in most statistical categories. Offensively, they rank 10th in kills (12.49 K/S), assists (11.62 A/S) and hitting percentage (.190). Defensively, opponents hit .228 against them, which ranks 12th. They rank sixth in digs (15.03 D/S) and 12th in blocks (1.82 B/S).

Andrea Beck is the squad's top hitter. Beck ranks fourth in the conference averaging 3.54 kills per set. Beck and the other Demon Deacon hitters are set up by Danae Rosendall. Rosendall is averaging 10.00 assists per set, which is fifth best in the ACC.

Megan Miller leads the team in digs (386) and ranks sixth in the ACC averaging 4.29 per set.


Scouting the Blue Devils

2012 Duke Blue Devils: 13-12, 4-9 ACC

The Blue Devils arrive in College Park off of a split of two home matches last weekend. Duke fell to rival North Carolina in four sets Friday night, but rebounded to defeat NC State in five sets on Saturday. Duke takes on Boston College Friday evening before making the trip to Maryland.

Duke is in the middle of the pack within the ACC offensively. The Blue Devils rank eighth in kills (13.20 K/S), assists (12.21 A/S) and hitting percentage (.216). Defensively, Duke is holding opponents to a. 184 hitting percentage, seventh best in the conference, and ranks first with 17.02 digs per set.

Jeme Obeime leads the team in kills (247) and Emily Sklar is averaging 3.13 kills per set, which ranks ninth in the ACC.

At setter, Kelsey Williams ranks ninth in the conference with a 6.85 assists per set average.

Defensively, Ali McCurdy anchors the backline at libero. McCurdy is averaging a league-best 5.60 digs per set, which also ranks 17th nationally. Along the net, Chelsea Cook is sixth in the ACC with 1.14 blocks per set.


Series History

The Terps lead the all-time series against Wake Forest 23-19. But the Deacs have won three in a row in the series including a 3-1 victory in October in Winston-Salem. The Terps last win over the Demon Deacons came in College Park on Nov. 12, 2010.

Duke has the upper hand in the all-time series against Maryland by a 42-25 margin. Maryland last defeated Duke on Nov. 14, 2010 in College Park in four sets.


Head Coach Tim Horsmon

Tim Horsmon is in his fifth season in charge of the Maryland volleyball team. With the Terps' victory over Villanova on Aug. 24, Horsmon won his 50th career game at Maryland.

With Maryland's win over Georgia Tech on Friday, Horsmon now has 286 career wins.


Simply Outstanding Ashleigh Crutcher capped an amazing offensive weekend with a career-high 28 kills against Clemson on Sunday. Her 28 kills is the most kills by an ACC player this season and is the most by a Maryland player since Lynnsy Jones had 33 against Florida State on Oct. 12, 2002.

In addition to her 28 kills on Sunday, Crutcher had 20 kills against Georgia Tech on Friday night becoming the first Terrapin with 20 or more kills in consecutive matches since Maria DiLivio totaled 20 against Clemson on Oct. 31, 2003, and 20 against Georgia Tech on Nov. 1, 2003.


Dynamic Duo Mary Cushman and Ashleigh Crutcher each tallied 20 kills against Georgia Tech on Friday. They became the first Maryland tandem with 20 or more kills in a match since Jennifer Dewalt and Sarah Treadwell each had 20 kills in an ACC semifinal against Duke on Nov. 20, 2004.


Terrapin Milestones

Against American on Oct. 23, Crutcher reached the 500 kill plateau with 14 kills against the Eagles. Crutcher added 48 more over the weekend and now has 548 kills for her career.

With 13 kills against Virginia on Sept. 30, senior Remy McBain eclipsed the 500 kill plateau for her career. McBain currently sits at 560 kills, which is the sixth-highest total for a Terp since 2007.

With 26 assists at Wake Forest on Oct. 6, McBain surpassed the 3,000 assist mark. The Leonia, N.J., native has 3,147 assists over her four years in College Park. She is only the fifth Terp all-time to eclipse 3,000 assists.

Junior Mary Cushman tallied one assisted block at NC State on Oct. 20 to reach 100 career assisted blocks. Cushman currently has 102 assisted blocks all-time.


Honored Terps

The Terps wrapped up their pre-conference tournament schedule at LIU Brooklyn on Sept. 14-15. Sophomore Adreené Elliott came away with the highest honors. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native was voted the MVP of both the Villanova Classic and Blackbird Invitational as well as earning a spot on the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills All-Tournament team.

At the Blackbird Invitational, Elliott tallied 31 kills and 23 total blocks including a career-high eight total blocks against St. John's. Elliott tied the mark with another eight total blocks against LIU Brooklyn the following night.

In three matches at the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational, Elliott finished with 32 kills and a .419 hitting percentage. In the win over George Washington, Elliott had a career-high .619 hitting percentage.

Elliott took home MVP honors at the Villanova Classic to open the season. In three matches, she tallied 26 kills and 13 total blocks. Elliott finished the weekend with a .353 hitting percentage.

Junior Sarah Harper and freshman Kamrin Gold joined Elliott on the Villanova Classic All-Tournament team. Harper finished with 49 digs, while Gold tallied 18 kills including 11 against Robert Morris.

With 54 kills at the Maryland Invitational, sophomore Ashleigh Crutcher earned a spot on the Maryland Invitational All-Tournament team. Crutcher leads the Terps in kills with 158.

Junior Mary Cushman and Gold earned spots on the Blackbird Invitational All-Tournament team. In three matches, Cushman finished with 28 kills, 13 digs and six total blocks. Cushman had a season-high .480 hitting percentage against St. John's. Gold completed the weekend with 25 kills and 16 digs.


Record Watch

Sophomore Adreené Elliott is currently fourth all-time in career hitting percentage. Elliott is hitting .313 for her career. Rachel Wagener holds the all-time record with a .341 hitting percentage.

For the season, Elliott is converting 38.3 percent of her attack opportunities, which places her second all-time. Andrea Mandella holds the all-time single-season record with a .387 hitting percentage which she set in 1989.

On the defensive side of the net, Elliott notched two solo blocks against Georgia Tech on Friday to move into eighth all-time with 54 career solo blocks. Elliott trails Jade Brown by two blocks for seventh all-time.

Junior Sarah Harper moved past Maria DiLivio (1,002) into eighth all-time in Maryland history in digs against LIU Brooklyn on Sept. 15. With 1,166 digs, Harper trails Bethany Springer by 38 digs for seventh all-time.

Senior Remy McBain ranks fifth in program history with 3,147 assists. She trails Aimee Huddleston by 423 assists for fourth all-time.


Fresh Faces

The Terps welcomed seven newcomers to the squad this season. The seven-member class was given highest honorable mention honors by PrepVolleyball.com.

So far this season, all seven freshmen have seen action for the Terps, which is the most in the ACC.

Mackenzie Dagostino and Kamrin Gold have been staples in the Terrapin attack. Dagostino is averaging 5.86 assists per set, while Gold is averaging 2.42 kills per set.

Emily Fraik totaled a career-high nine kills at North Carolina on Oct. 19.

Kelsey Hrebenach stuffed a career-high seven attack attempts against Georgia Tech on Friday. Two days later, Hrebenach totaled a personal-best seven kills against Clemson.

Amy Dion has started at libero the past three matches. Friday night against Georgia Tech, Dion recorded a career-best 24 digs and fell one dig shy of tying that mark Sunday against Clemson.
