Box Score

DURHAM, N.C. - Sophomore Ashleigh Crutcher totaled a match-high 16 kills, but the Maryland volleyball team lost to Duke 3-0 (25-13, 29-27, 25-23) Friday evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Sophomore Adreené Elliott joined Crutcher with double-digit kills. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native knocked down 12 kills on .556 hitting to raise her hitting percentage this season to .411. Elliott also added four blocks, one of which was solo, as she reached 50 career solo blocks and moved into sole possession of 10th all-time at Maryland.

Senior Remy McBain notched her sixth double-double of the season, which ties her with freshman Mackenzie Dagostino for the most on the squad. McBain finished with 19 assists and 13 digs.

The opening set went the way of the Blue Devils with the Terps only converting 8.1 percent of their attack opportunities and committing six errors. After a McBain kill tied the set at four, Duke rattled off five of the next six points. The Terps closed the gap to two points at 9-7 and 10-8, but were unable to get over the hump.

The Blue Devils went on a 7-2 run to put the set out of reach. Elliott (4 kills) and Crutcher (3 kills) combined for seven of the Terps nine kills during the frame.

Crutcher turned it on in the second set. The sophomore tallied six kills on nine chances and the Elliott added four blocks to pace the Terps. Maryland jumped out to a 4-1 lead behind an assisted block from Crutcher and Elliott and a service ace from freshman Emily Fraik. The Terps extended their lead to 11-5 after Elliott combined with Fraik on a block, which forced Duke to take a timeout.

Following the timeout, the Blue Devils began to chip away at the lead. Duke scored five of the next seven points as Maryland's lead dwindled to 13-10. Elliott blocked a Christina Vucich attack attempt to put the Terps back up by four points, but Duke kept the momentum and eventually tied the set at 20-20.

With the set tied at 22, Crutcher knocked down a cross-court kill and junior Carlisle Abele scored off a Duke block attempt to give the Terps set point. Duke scored the next two points to extend the frame. After fighting off two Blue Devil set points, Maryland succumbed at 29-27.

The third set was the tightest of the match as it featured 11 ties and lead changes. With Duke leading 16-12 midway through the third set, the Terps scored a quick three points behind two kills from Crutcher and a kill from senior Caitlin Adams.

After a Blue Devil timeout, Duke extended its lead to 22-17. However, the Terps did not go away. Elliott tallied back-to-back kills, and following a Blue Devil attacking error, Crutcher brought Maryland within one point. Maryland eventually tied the set at 23-23, but Duke scored the next two points to win the match.
