Hawkins Named ACC Player of the Week

Nov. 12, 2012

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Senior Tianna Hawkins of the fifth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team was named ACC Player of the Week the league announced Monday.

Hawkins began her senior season with a bang by posting back-to-back double-doubles in wins over Mount St. Mary's (88-47) and Loyola (Md.) (88-45), while becoming the 28th player in Maryland women's basketball history to break the 1,000-point mark on Nov. 9 versus the Mount.

In the first weekend of play, she averaged 25.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and shot over 77 percent from the field. The Clinton, Md., native scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in her season debut against Mount St. Mary's, and followed that performance up with a career-high 33 points, including 26 in the first half, and 13 rebounds against Greyhounds.

The Player of the Week honor is the third of Hawkins' career. She twice earned the honor during the 2011-12 season and was named ACC Rookie of the Week once in 2009-10.

Next, the Terps will stay on the road for a 2 p.m. game at St. Joseph's in Philadelphia next Saturday.
