Ashleigh Crutcher had a match-high 12 kills and Mary Cushman tallied 10 kills, but the Maryland volleyball team (16-15, 7-12 ACC) lost to 24th-ranked Miami 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-15) Sunday afternoon at the Knight Sports Complex.
Crutcher added seven digs, while Cushman totaled eight digs and a block. Mackenzie Dagostino finished with a team-high 22 assists.
In the opening set, Crutcher and Cushman combined for seven kills to pace the Terps. The Canes seized control of the opening set early as Miami scored six of the first eight points. The Hurricanes continued to push the pace and increased their lead to 16-9 before Maryland called a timeout.
The Terps trimmed the lead to five points after consecutive kills by Cushman and Remy McBain. Miami held off the late charge and won the set by seven.
Miami again started quickly with a 10-4 run to begin the second set. Two kills from Cushman and a kill from McBain cut the deficit to two at 10-8. Following a Miami point, Crutcher brought the Terps within one again, but would not draw closer. The Hurricanes went on a 7-3 run to pull away and eventually win the set 25-19.
The intermission did not slow down the nationally-ranked Canes in the third set. Miami opened on a 10-2 run and never allowed Maryland to get closer than seven points. The Hurricanes won the set 25-15.
