Terps Capture 2010 ACC Championship
A Matt Kassel penalty kick goal followed by a tremendous defensive effort gave Maryland its fourth league tournament title in 2010, as the Terps dropped North Carolina, 1-0, in the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Championship.
Maryland goalkeeper Zac MacMath was named the ACC Championship Most Valuable Player after tallying six saves to preserve the Terps' 13th shutout this season. Kassel, Casey Townsend and Jason Herrick were also tabbed to the all-tournament team.
Kassel netted his eighth goal of the year and second against UNC when his penalty kick beat Tar Heel goalkeeper Scott Goodwin in the 14th minute. The junior from Bridgewater, N.J., set up the golden opportunity as well when his shot bounced off Enzo Martinez's hand to set up his fifth penalty kick chance of the season.
Former All-American and current Philadelphia goalkeeper Zac MacMath reflects on his second ACC title:
"After a disappointing 2009 season with no championships, the team was amped up for a chance to win another championship for the Maryland soccer program. After coming up short in the ACC regular season battle to North Carolina, the team wanted the ACC championship more than ever, showing that our team was destined for something great. After a hard fought game against Clemson, we took on our biggest rival Virginia. The game against Virginia was once again a battle of sorts, with both teams having a good amount of chances but our team showed why we deserved to be in the ACC final winning 2-0.
For the second time in my career at Maryland, I had made it to the ACC championship, this time against North Carolina, a team that had beat us earlier in the year 2-1 at UNC. It was a tough game. UNC was a talented group that had some great players, but an early red card to my current teammate Michael Farfan, gave us an opportunity we weren't going to miss.
"Matt Kassel tucked his PK away to give us a 1-0 lead that we would eventually hold onto thanks to some amazing defending. As a co-captain with Jason Herrick, winning the 2010 ACC championship was my second-favorite soccer moment at Maryland. Hoisting the trophy over my head with my teammates is something that I will never forget."
