COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team will play host to St. Peter's College for a doubleheader Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Maryland (11-4), which is a perfect 5-0 at home, will look to improve upon its 11-1 non-conference record.
Despite allowing 21 earned runs last weekend, the Terps still lead the Atlantic Coast Conference in team ERA (2.27), and will look to a senior to stop St. Peter's in game one. RHP Sander Beck, who has won both of his starts and has a 2.38 ERA in three appearances, will take to the mound for the Terrapins.
Beck pitched 5 innings in his first start of the season against Manhattan (3/3), spreading out five hits and allowing one run while striking out three. In his most recent start, the senior went 5 1/3 at Navy (3/7), allowing two runs on three hits while striking seven and walking four.
Maryland's game-two starter is TBA. St. Peter's has yet to determine its pitching matchups.
Several Terrapins have been swinging the bat well lately, none more so than freshman third baseman K.J. Hockaday and sophomore outfielder Michael Montville. Both are riding six-game hitting streaks, with Hockaday batting .455 and Montville .429 over that stretch. Hockaday leads the team with a .333 average on the season and also has a team-high seven multiple-hit games.
Senior infielder Tomo Delp was inserted into the starting lineup a week ago and has six hits in his last 15 at-bats (.400), including a pair of home runs. Senior shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez, meanwhile, is leading the team with 11 RBIs and has seen his batting average rise from .160 to .264 over the last eight games. He's coming off a 3-for-4 effort in the finale at Wake Forest last weekend.
Scouting the Peacocks
St. Peter's has a 3-11 record after splitting a four-game series at Savannah State last weekend. The Peacocks play at Fairleigh Dickinson Tuesday afternoon before coming to College Park.
A member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, St. Peter's returned all eight starters from last season's team that finished 16-34.
Through 14 games, the Peacocks were hitting .232 as a team and the pitching staff had a 5.45 ERA. Freshman outfielder Williams Rawson (.412) and sophomore catcher James Smith (.333) are among the team leaders in hitting.
