Charlie Haslup struck out a career-high seven and faced just one over the minimum in seven scoreless innings to lead Maryland to a 1-0 victory over Norfolk State Tuesday evening.
Making his first start of the season and just the second of his career, Haslup established career highs in both strikeouts and innings pitched as Maryland (29-19) got its ACC-leading 10th shutout of the year.
Reliever Michael Boyden struck out five of the six batters he faced in two innings, stretching his scoreless-inning streak to 16. Boyden last allowed a run on April 3 against George Mason.
Haslup allowed just two hits and faced the minimum through six innings. Norfolk State's (16-24) only base runners in the first six innings were wiped out - Tyon Ore was caught stealing and Chris Warren was thrown out by Maryland center fielder Korey Wacker trying to stretch a single into a double.
The junior struck out the side in the sixth and set down the first two in the seventh by way of strikeout before issuing his only walk. Norfolk State didn't get a runner past first base all game.
Maryland's lone run came in the fourth, when Ryan Holland doubled to the gap in right-center field with two outs and scored on a RBI single by Wacker.
That proved to be enough offense for the fifth-best pitching staff in the nation. Maryland entered this week with a 2.74 ERA, fifth among 297 Division I teams. The Terps had already established the school record for shutouts on April 11, when they got their eighth of the year against West Virginia.
They've continued to add to it in a dominant run through non-conference play. Now 21-3 in non-league games, Maryland has allowed just one earned run in its last five non-conference games, a span of 45 innings.
After Tuesday's victory, Maryland saw its team ERA dip to 2.68.
The Terps return to the road on Wednesday when they travel to Fairfax, Va., for a 3 p.m. game against George Mason.
