COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The ACC champion Maryland women's basketball team welcomed Katie Fowler to its staff this week as the new assistant director of basketball performance.
Fowler comes to College Park after working in strength and conditioning in men's and women's basketball at the University of Virginia. She will work with the team and staff on basketball-specific athletic development and performance training programs tailored specifically for members of the women's basketball team, as well as provide nutritional guidance.
"We're ecstatic about Katie. She fits the really high standards for what we want out of our basketball performance coaches," head coach Brenda Frese said. "She's on the cutting-edge in terms of techniques and she's hungry to keep learning more every day. She's going to continue what we've seen the past two years, which is using basketball-specific methods to help our players push beyond what they might have thought were their limits. We really feel like we have the best basketball performance program in the country."
Fowler earned her bachelor's degree in exercise science from Truman State University in 2008, where she played basketball for four years. She went on to earn her master's of education in intercollegiate athletic leadership from the University of Washington in 2009.
In the 2008-09 season, she worked as a graduate assistant in the strength and conditioning unit at Iowa State and worked with the school's Olympic sports. Through the 2009-10 season, Fowler served as a women's basketball assistant coach at the University of Illinois-Springfield. Prior to joining Virginia in August 2011, she spent a year as a personal trainer at The Boston Racquet Club.
"I am humbled and honored to become a part of the Maryland basketball family," Fowler said. "Coach Frese and her staff immediately impressed me with the tradition of excellence they have established not only in the ACC, but on a national level. The opportunity to work alongside Kyle Tarp every day and continue to grow and advance the basketball performance training program he has established makes me incredibly excited about the future of Maryland basketball."
Fowler will work alongside director of basketball performance, Kyle Tarp, who began implementing his program with the women's basketball team two years ago. Last season, Tarp worked with the men's basketball team and will oversee both programs this year.
"We are excited to announce Katie Fowler as the new assistant director of basketball performance," Tarp said. "Katie is dynamic, competitive, intelligent and brings a wealth of training knowledge and experience to College Park. Katie has developed a deep understanding of the performance needs specific to basketball through her experience as a collegiate level player, coach and strength and conditioning specialist. Through these experiences, she has developed a progressive, logical and comprehensive training system that will provide our athletes with the physical tools to be successful."
Maryland ended the season with a 31-5 overall record, winning 10 of its last 11 games. The Terrapins won the program's 10th ACC title in March and notched the fourth 30-win season in school history. They advanced to their ninth Elite Eight and fourth in head coach Brenda Frese's 10 years.
