GREENSBORO, N.C. - With preseason training camp just two weeks away, the Maryland football team moved closer to the start of the 2012 season as head coach Randy Edsall and senior captains Kevin Dorsey and Joe Vellano represented the team at the ACC Kickoff.
The annual event showcases the leagues head coaches and two student-athletes from each school - one offense and one defensive player. Dorsey and Vellano arrived in Greensboro Saturday night before conducting interviews with media for much of the day Sunday. Both expressed an eagerness to get preseason camp underway on Monday, Aug. 6. Maryland plays its season opener on Saturday, Sept. 1 against William & Mary at noon.
"We started a new season with spring ball, having a new offensive and defensive coordinator, and everybody is just ready to just turn the page and start fall camp," said Vellano. "We have a lot of guys coming back on defense, 10 of 11 [starters] plus Kenny Tate."
"It's definitely exciting knowing its coming up," said Dorsey. "I can say as far as the coaches and players we're all on the same page. Just from an offensive perspective, I think we have a lot of depth at all the positions, the most we've had in a while. We have a lot of young talent that has already played, and a lot of young talent coming in."
Edsall, meanwhile, took his turn with the media Monday. After a morning round of golf and a photo session with the other league head coaches that started the afternoon, Edsall made the rounds with regional and national television, radio, and writers.
Media members in attendance picked Florida State as the preseason favorite in the Atlantic Division and to win the ACC Championship, with Virginia Tech the favorite in the Coastal Division. For more information on the 2012 ACC Kickoff, visit theacc.com.
