The last time Maryland opened the season on the road was 2009. The Terps defeated Army, 3-0, in West Point, N.Y. Maryland then played at Fordham and beat the Rams, 2-1.
Maryland is 6-0-2 in season openers since 2004.
Admission is free for the Maryland-Villanova game, which will be played at the Villanova Soccer Complex on Villanova's West Campus.
Fans will be able to follow all of the action on umterps.com via Gametracker: Navy | Villanova.
The Terps return four of their top five goal-scorers from last season, as well as four of their top six assist leaders. Leading the way up top will be forwards Hayley Brock, who combined to score 12 goals and add eight assists in 2011. Freshman Gabby Galanti has been impressive throughout the preseason and veterans Alex Reed and Marisa Kresge will also compete for playing time.
The Wildcats open their season on Friday, Aug. 17 vs. American before welcoming in the Terps on Sunday.
The Terps recorded 20 straight wins over non-ACC foes before tying Georgetown, 1-1, in second round of the NCAA tournament in 2010. Maryland is now 28-1-3 in its last 32 non-conference games. The Terps had been unbeaten in 31-straight non-conference games prior to losing, 1-0, at Oklahoma State in the Sweet 16 of the 2011 NCAA tournament.
Through the seasons, the Terps have had a knack for shutting teams out at Ludwig Field. Maryland has won 74 of its 115 victories (64.3%) at Ludwig Field via shutout. Add in the 12 0-0 ties the Terps have had at Ludwig Field and it totals 86 times that Maryland has shutout its opponent in 183 games (47.0%).
