New Faces at Keeper

Aug. 24, 2012

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - For the first time since 2007, Will Swaim or Zac MacMath will not be Maryland's primary starting goalkeeper but the Terps are enjoying a wealth of young talent at the goalkeeper position heading into the 2012 season.

Keith Cardona is the most experienced member of the goalkeeping crew with four starts to his name. The sophomore surrendered only four goals in those starts and posted three shutouts with a 0.95 goals against average.

Redshirt freshman Jordan Tatum will undoubtedly challenge Cardona for the starting role. Tatum had a tremendous spring season for the Terps. Cody Niedermeier is a promising freshman who ranked in the top half of College Soccer News' Top 150 Recruits.

"Keith finished strong at the end of the season for us and Jordan finished strong at the end of the spring," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "Cody has been injured most of the spring but just got cleared and is going to help push both of those guys."

Cirovski is impressed with how three all are gelling as a unit.

"They all three have a great relationship and that's important because there's not a big margin separating them. At this point the battle is mostly between Jordan and Keith for the No. 1 spot just because Cody has been out a little while but he's going to push too. "
