Thomas Named to Wade Watch List

ATLANTA - Maryland women's basketball junior forward Alyssa Thomas was named to the "Wade Watch" list for the 2013 honor Tuesday by the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association. Thomas, the 2012 ACC Player of the Year, was one of 12 finalists for the 2012 award last spring.
Thomas capped off a stellar sophomore season by being named a WBCA Division I Coaches' All-American and a First Team Associated Press All-American. She led the ACC in scoring with 17.2 points per game - the second-best average among all Maryland sophomores. She finished the year among the best in the league with 8.0 rebounds per game, assists (3.2), free throw percentage (80.1) and defensive rebounds (5.5).
Now in its 36th year, the State Farm Wade Trophy is named in honor of the late, legendary three-time national champion Delta State University coach, Lily Margaret Wade. Regarded as "The Heisman of Women's Basketball," the award is presented annually to the NCAA® Division I Player of the Year by the National Association of Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) and the WBCA.
The preseason list is composed of top NCAA Division I women's basketball players who best embody Wade's spirit from 18 institutions and eight conferences. A committee of coaches, administrators and media from across the United States compiled the list using the following criteria: game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team and overall playing ability.
Duke's Chelsea Gray and Elizabeth Williams are the other two ACC players named to the list.
The Terrapins will open the new season against Mount St. Mary's on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. They will host Catholic and Goldey-Beacom in exhibition games on Oct. 30 and Nov. 5, respectively.
