COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland will play host to the annual Terrapin Invitational at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex Saturday. The event will feature over 20 teams from around the region.
The meet is set to begin at 9 a.m. with the opening events on both the track and in the field. The final running event is tentatively scheduled to get the gun at 4:30 p.m.
"The team is looking to continue the momentum from the first meet where we had some solid performances," head coach Andrew Valmon said. "It is always a strong motivating factor to compete at home where we can have the support of our fan base and alumni."
The Terps began the 2013 season with a solid showing at the Nittany Lion Invitational last weekend at Penn State. Maryland tallied eight ECAC marks on the weekend, including three in the high jump. Amber Melville, Thea LaFond, and Amina Smith all posted qualifying marks and helped Maryland capture three of the top four finishes in the season opener.
LaFond also placed second in the triple jump with a personal best of 41-10.00. Her mark in the triple jump moved her into the No. 2 spot on the Maryland's all-time list.
In addition to the Terps' ECAC qualifying high jump trio, Moriah Young also had a big day at Penn State, winning the shot put and taking second in the weight throw. Her 50-02.75 shot put toss now ranks third all-time at Maryland and her weight throw performance of 58-05.75 gave the senior her second ECAC qualifying tally on the day.
"This will be the last indoor home meet for our senior class so we want to send them out with a bang," Valmon said.
Maryam Fikri and Myah Hicks led Maryland on the track side, capturing ECAC marks in the 1000 meters (2:53.82) and mile (4:58.14), respectively.
The Terrapin Invitational is Maryland's lone indoor meet at home. The Terps will also host the Maryland Invitational outdoor meet on March 30 and the Kehoe Twilight Meet on May 2.
