On Ainsworth: Coming off a solid junior campaign while still recovering from Tommy John surgery, but had a pain-free fall and showed continued progress on the mound … a polished pitcher who owns a tremendous fastball and boasts a variety of other pitches … will be in the running for the No. 1 spot in the rotation ... a terrific all-around athlete who is one of the fastest players on the team ... a candidate for June's Major League draft.
As a Redshirt Junior (2002): Six wins were most on the team and 62.1 innings pitched were good for second … tied for team lead in pitching starts with 13 … more than doubled his previous single-season record for strikeouts, fanning 53 hitters in 2002 … 6.64 ERA was lowest of career … went six innings without letting up an earned run vs. Marshall (Feb. 24) … struck out career-best eight batters through six shutout innings en route to the victory vs. Pace (March 1) … allowed two earned runs and struck out two in five innings on the hill at North Carolina (March 16) … gave up one run and struck out seven in a season-high seven innings vs. Brown (March 22) … fanned three and allowed only one earned run while recording the win at William & Mary (April 2) …struck out six over 5.2 innings vs. Virginia (Apr. 7).
As a Redshirt Sophomore (2001): Came back strong from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow to earn a spot in the weekend rotation ... appeared in eight games, making five starts ... tied for the team lead with three victories ... turned in his best performance of his career vs. nationally-ranked Florida State on May 4 ... tossed a career-high 7.1 innings in that start and tied a career-best with four strikeouts ... made his first appearance in over a year on March 14 vs. Coppin State ... he pitched one inning and struck out one vs. the Eagles ... pitched 1.1 innings to earn his first win of the season vs. George Washington on March 28 ... had another good outing vs. Coppin State on April 4 as he pitched three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit to earn his second win of the year ... fanned three in two innings of work April 7 vs. North Carolina ... notched his third win vs. UMES by tossing three shutout frames and fanning three ... made his first ACC start April 22 at Virginia and threw five innings to go along with three strikeouts ... earned the start in the Terps' opening game at the ACC Tournament and lasted 3.1 innings and allowed two earned runs ... named to the Maryland Athletics Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll.
As a Sophomore (2000): A medical hardship year ... made one start before getting hurt, pitching 1.2 innings and striking out two against Old Dominion.
As a Freshman (1999): Pitched 3.0 innings, allowing one run and striking out four batters against Duke on April 2 … threw a combined 3.0 innings, did not allow a run and struck out three batters in the series against NC State April 16-18 … tossed 5.2 innings against Towson on April 27 … picked up the win against Richmond on May 5.
At Hershey: An all-state selection in both football and baseball at Hershey High School ... earned all-conference honors at both shortstop and pitcher as a senior ... two-time team MVP ... MVP of his football team his senior campaign as he rushed for just under 1,500 yards and totaled 20 touchdowns.
