With an extensive lacrosse background, Sonny Ziegler joins the Maryland men's lacrosse staff as an assistant coach in 2001. He will work with the goalies and aid Slafkosky on the offensive end of the field.
Most recently Ziegler served as a lacrosse official, refereeing games on all college levels (Division I, II, III and junior college) as well as high school since 1997.
Prior to that Ziegler served as a coach at four different Maryland high schools. He worked as an assistant coach at power Calvert Hall in 1997 and 1998. He served as an assistant coach at Mount Hebron High School in 1994 and 1995 before being elevated to head coach in 1996. In that season, he led Mount Hebron to the Maryland 3A-4A championship game.
From 1990-93, Ziegler served as an assistant coach at Glenelg High School, aiding the team's return to the playoffs in his final two seasons. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Mount Saint Joseph's.
A Pennsylvania native, Ziegler played his college lacrosse at Salisbury State. He was an attacker for the Seagulls from 1985-87, helping the team to the 1986 NCAA Tournament. Ziegler earned his bachelor of science in kinesiology from Maryland in 2000.
The 35-year-old Ziegler and his wife Erin reside in Catonsville, Md.
