On Moran: Had a breakout campaign as a junior playing an offensive midfielder role after spending his first two years as a defensive midfielder and face-off specialist … was a major offensive weapon … developed a strong shot … also saw time on attack last season … will handle some face-offs as a senior … a physically gifted player … won the “Be The Best Award” along with Andy Burman as the team's hardest-working players in the weightroom as a sophomore … a good athlete and tough Long Island kid.
As a junior (2002): Emerged as a potent offensive weapon on the second midfield after primarily serving as a face-off specialist his first two years … finished sixth on the team in points (19) … netted 15 goals after not scoring in his first two college seasons … played all 13 games, drawing two starts as an attackman late in the season … had two assists vs. Mount St. Mary's (2/26) for first career points … posted first career goals, as he scored a hat trick at Duke (3/2) … tallied two assists vs. Towson (3/9) for second time this season … netted fourth goal at Bucknell (3/12) … posted second multi-goal game of year with two vs. Delaware (3/16) … scored first-career game-winning goal at North Carolina (3/23) in early fourth quarter … notched second-quarter goal vs. Navy (4/5) on only shot of game … netted goal with :01 left in first quarter at Hopkins (4/13) … scored three goals vs. Duke (4/19) for second time in ACCs, starting on Terps' first attack line … scored six of his first 12 career goals vs. Duke … recorded his third hat trick of the season in finale at UMBC (5/4) … named to the Maryland Honor Roll.
As a sophomore (2001): Played in all 16 games, drawing the starting face-off nod on five occasions … saw most of time on face-off duty, splitting time with Brian Carroll … won 51.3 percent of his draws, winning 59 of 115 face-offs … scooped up 51 groundballs, second on the team to Michael Howley … had a strong game at Denver (2/25), winning seven-of-13 face-offs and corralling six groundballs … against North Carolina (3/24), won 6-of-10 draws and grabbed seven groundballs … won a career-best 87.5 percent of draws at Navy (4/7), winning seven-of-eight and grabbing six groundballs … after Navy game, earned the starting nod vs. Johns Hopkins (4/14) … one of his best games came against Virginia (4/20) in the ACC semifinals, as he won 10-of-16 draws and scooped up three groundballs … continued solid play with two games of career-best eight groundballs at Mount St. Mary's (4/25) and vs. UMBC (5/5), also won more than 53 percent of his face-offs in those games … won six-of-nine at Yale (4/28), along with four groundballs.
As a freshman (2000): Played in 13 games, drawing one start … took 95 face-offs, sharing duties with Jeff Shirk and Brian Carroll, winning 38 … scooped up 29 groundballs … took 12 draws, winning four in college debut against Mount St. Mary's (2/27) … won six of 12 face-offs in win at North Carolina (3/25) … called “the hero of the game” by coach Dick Edell after win at North Carolina for winning crucial face-offs down the stretch … recorded season highs of nine face-off wins and 16 draws against Virginia (3/31) … awarded first start on the face-off against Navy (4/8) … took 14 face-offs against Yale (4/28), winning six … scooped up eight groundballs against Yale … won seven of 13 draws and picked up six groundballs against UMBC (5/6).
Before Maryland: Lettered in football and lacrosse at Chaminade High School in Mineola, N.Y. … three-year starter under his father Jack Moran and compiled a 31-5 record over the last two seasons … All-American and all-league as a senior … played in North-South Game following senior season … part of gold medal winning Empire State Games Long Island team in 1998 … started at safety on football team … was an all-league player as a junior and senior.
Personal: Ryan Christopher Moran … born Sept. 7, 1981 in Massapequa, N.Y. … son of Kathryne and Jack Moran … brother of Jack (25), Patrick (24) and Shannon (13) … uncle Richie Moran played lacrosse at Maryland (1958-60) before becoming one of the most successful coaches in lacrosse history as he led Cornell to three national championships and is a member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame … came to Maryland “to win a national championship” … majoring in criminal justice.
