Faceoff between Maryland and Cornell is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium
On McGinnis: Senior tri-captain … first team All-American candidate … preseason first team All-American by College Lacrosse USA and Inside Lacrosse's Face-Off Magazine … emerged as one of the nation's premier goalies in first season as Terps' starter in 2000 … coach Edell expects a repeat performance although “he won't be able to sneak up on anybody this season” … southpaw has extremely quick hands … throws strong outlet passes … tremendous work ethic.
As a junior (2000): Remarkable breakout season as Terps' new starter in the cage … named All-ACC goalie … named to the ACC All-Tournament team … a third team All-America by College Lacrosse USA … among the national leaders in goals against average (finished 10th with 8.55) and save percentage (finished eight with 61.6) all season long … started all 16 games after never making a start in two previous seasons … led the team and ranked 22nd nationally in groundballs with 90 (5.62 per game) … recorded 10 or more saves in 13 of 16 games … did not allow more than 10 goals in six of his seven games … recorded second most saves in a game among all of Division I with 27 against Virginia (3/31) … opened the season with 10 saves, allowing just one goal in first college start against Mount St. Mary's (2/27) … allowed just three goals, making high 22 saves against Bucknell (3/7) … allowed just three goals, making 15 saves against Delaware (3/15) … made 27 saves, the most in Division I at the time against then-No. 2 Virginia (3/31) … also picked up career-high 11 groundballs against the Cavaliers … followed that stunning performance allowed just five goals, making 10 saves against Navy (4/8) … helped Terps to ACC final by allowing just six goals to high-scoring Duke (4/21) on ACC semifinal … made 18 saves in ACC title game against Virginia (4/23) … finished the season with double-figure save totals in final five games … stopped 13 shots against Hofstra (5/14) in NCAA first round and 15 against Princeton (5/20) in NCAA quarterfinal.
As a sophomore (1999): Came on for action in seven games … in 70 minutes, allowed just six goals for 5.14 goals against average … posted 71.4 save percentage … played season-high 15 minutes on three occasions, against Providence (2/27), Penn State (3/17) and Virginia (4/23) … made season-high five saves against Penn State … did not allow a goal in three of seven appearances.
As a freshman (1998): Saw action in four games … recorded a 57.1 save percentage and a 10.0 goals against average… played season-high 12 minutes in season-opener against Villanova (2/21) and allowed just one goal … made first college save in two minutes of action against Towson (3/7) … made season-high three saves in three minutes in NCAA semifinal upset of No. 1 seed Loyola (5/23) … finished year making NCAA championship debut playing one minute in relief against Princeton (5/25).
Before Maryland: Two-year starting goalie for lacrosse team at Loyola High School … played under coach Joe McFadden … earned second team all-metro and first team all-county as a senior … played in Maryland Senior All-Star game in 1997 … served as team captain as a senior … also played football and basketball.
Personal: Patrick Colin McGinnis … born May 23, 1979 in Westminster, Md. … son of Carol and Arthur McGinnis … brother of Mike (27), Shannon (26), Erin (23) and Tim (19) … brother Mike played lacrosse at Richmond, and sister Shannon played lacrosse at Lynchburg … sister Erin was an All-American at North Carolina last season in women's lacrosse … majoring in general business and communications.
