No. 7 Maryland Travels To Wisconsin To Meet Badgers
Maryland Coach Cirovski Being Inducted Into the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Hall of Fame
TERPS REBOUND: Maryland improved to 6-1-1 overall, 1-1-1 in the ACC, and rebounded from last Sunday's loss to N.C. State, after defeating the then-4th-ranked Duke Blue Devils, 2-1, in overtime, this past Sunday. Junior midfielder Randy Merkel scored the game-winning goal at the 94-minute mark on an assist from junior midfielder Steve Armas. Junior Pierre Venditti scored the opening goal of the afternoon.
MERKEL HONORED: Maryland junior midfielder Randy Merkel (Carol Stream, Ill.) was named ACC Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal that lifted the Terps to a 2-1 overtime upset against Duke.
TERPS TRAVEL TO WISCONSIN: The ACC meets the Big 10 this Friday night when the Terps travel to Madison, Wis., for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Badgers. The Terps currently stand in third place in the ACC standings behind N.C. State and Virginia, respectively.
HOMECOMING: This weekend's trip to Wisconsin will be sort of like a "homecoming" for Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski and nine Maryland Terps. Cirovski, who played collegiate soccer at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, will be inducted into the school's Hall of Fame, while sophomores Andy Kirk and Jamie Eichmann hail from the state of Wisconsin. Maryland will also have Terp parents from the states of Illinois and Minnesota in attendance on Friday night.
MOVIN' BACK UP: Maryland moved up three spots in this week's NSCAA poll after falling to No. 10 last week. The Terps, who were ranked No. 2 prior to their loss to N.C. State, are now 7th. The Terps are ranked 8th by Soccer America. Maryland is ranked second in the South Atlantic Region behind Virginia.
SCOUTING THE BADGERS: Wisconsin enters Friday's match with a 5-4 record...sophomore forward Kareem Aal leads the Badgers in scoring with nine points (3G, 3A)...senior goalkeeper Todd Wilson has played in all nine games for the Badgers, recording 38 saves, two shutouts and 13 goals (1.39 GAA)...Maryland will be the third top 25- ranked team the Badgers have faced this year.
CALLING CULLEN: Senior defender Leo Cullen, a 1997 National Player of the Year candidate, continues to lead the Maryland defense. Maryland's defense has allowed only eight goals in its eight games.
CIROVSKI AT MARYLAND: Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski owns a 50-33-8 record at the helm of the Terp program. Overall, Cirovski's record is 78-45-14 in seven years of coaching. He will be inducted into his alma mater's (Wisconsin-Milwaukee) Hall of Fame when the Terps travel to Madison, Wis. for an October 3 meeting with the Wisconsin Badgers.

IN GOAL: Sophomore goalkeeper Andy Kirk, a member of the U.S. Under-20 National Team and the World University Games squad, has played in seven matches, missing the Adelphi match because of his committment to the World University Games squad. In six games, Kirk has allowed seven goals (.949 goals allowed average) and has posted two shutouts. His .949 GAA ranks him fourth in the ACC.
