TERPS LEAP TO NO. 2 IN NSCAA POLL: After opening season wins against Adelphi and Hofstra, the Terps leaped from No. 13 to No. 2 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. Florida International is ranked No. 1.
TERPS WIN TWO: Maryland opened its 1997 campaign last weekend, defeating Adelphi (5-1) and Hofstra (2-0). Juniors Judah Cooks, Randy Merkel and Steve Armas, senior Mike McIlwain, and freshman Jason Sardis each scored goals against Adelphi. In the 2-0 shutout against Hofstra, sophomore goalkeeper Andy Kirk recorded his first shutout of the season, while it was Sardis and Armas who scored the two goals.
UP NEXT: Maryland hosts the 1997 Diadora/3 Bros. Classic Tournament on Friday, Sept. 5 and Sunday, Sept. 7. Featured in this year's tournament is Santa Clara, George Mason, Howard and host Maryland. George Mason and Howard kick off on Friday at 4:30 p.m. with Maryland meeting Santa Clara at 7 p.m. On Sunday, George Mason meets Santa Clara at noon, and the Terps conclude tournament play versus Howard at 2:30 p.m.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION: Santa Clara...The Broncos own a 0-2 record, losing to No. 1-ranked UCLA, 2-1, and to Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, at the Reebok Invitational in Fullerton, Calif...sophomores Adam Eyre and Shawn Purcell are the Broncos' leading scorers, each totaling one goal apiece...senior goalkeeper Joe Cannon has a 2.0 goals allowed average. Howard...The Bison enter this weekend's tournament with a 1-1 record...defeated the Citadel, 4-1, and lost to Rider, 4-3, in overtime...sophomore midfielder Mike Lawrence and sophomore forward Greg Simmonds lead the Bison with two goals apiece...Lawrence also has two assists to lead the team. George Mason...The Patriots opened their 1997 season by splitting a pair of games last weekend at the Northern Illinois/Adidas Fall Kickoff Classic...the Patriots defeated Eastern Illinois, 2-1, in overtime, before dropping a 3-2 decision to host Northern Illinois to leave their record at 1-1...ranked No. 20 in the latest NSCAA poll...juniors Alex Teixeira and Scott Thelen each have scored five points (2 goals, 2 assists) to lead the team...senior forward John Shields has a team-high three assists...junior goalkeeper Paul Marcoullier has a 0.79 goals allowed average.
MARYLAND MINUTES: Own a 2-0 record...junior Randy Merkel has scored a team-high six points, and has a team-high four assists...Merkel scored the game-winning goal against Adelphi...freshman Jason Sardis and junior Steve Armas have scored two goals apiece to lead the Terps...sophomore goalkeeper Andy Kirk returned from the World University Games just in time to record his first shutout of the season against Hofstra...his understudy, freshman Christian Lewis started against Adelphi and allowed only one goal.
CALENDARS MARKED!!!: Maryland hosts ACC rival Virginia on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. on Ludwig Field. It marks the rematch of the 1996 ACC Championship game when the Terps defeated the then-No. 1-ranked Cavaliers in Charlottesville. It is the first ACC men's soccer match played under the lights at Ludwig Field.
