Fourth-Ranked Maryland Meets George Mason Wednesday
Terps then resume ACC action at North Carolina Sunday
TERPS GROUND BADGERS: Freshman forward Kirk Miller (Shorewood, Minn.) scored two goals to lead the then-No. 7-ranked Terrapins to a 2-0 win over the Wisconsin Badgers. Junior midfielder Randy Merkel and junior forward Pierre Venditti were credited with the assists on Miller's goals.TERPS MEET GEORGE MASON AND NORTH CAROLINA: Maryland travels to George Mason on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. matchup with the Patriots. The Terps resume ACC action on Sunday, traveling to North Carolina for a 2 p.m. matchup.
THE LAST TIME THEY MET: The then No. 2-ranked Maryland met George Mason in the opening game of the season last year. The Patriots defeated the Terps 2-1 in College Park. Senior Shane Dougherty scored the Terps' lone goal of the game. The Terps handed the Tar Heels a 3-1 defeat to end regular-season play last year. The Terps then went on to win four straight games before losing to William & Mary in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
MOVIN' BACK UP: Maryland, who began the 1997 season ranked No. 2, is slowly moving back up after dropping to No. 10 after losing to N.C. State. The Terps, who were ranked No. 7 in last week's NSCAA poll, are now No. 4. Maryland is ranked No. 5 in the latest Soccer News poll, and No. 7 by Soccer America.
SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS: George Mason enters Wednesday's contest with the Terps carrying a 7-3-1 record...Eduardo Lima has scored a team-high 22 points (8G, 6A) while Alex Teixeira has added 16 points...goalkeeper Dan Cochran has a 1.24 GAA and has posted one shutout...the Patriots participated in Maryland's Diadora/3 Brothers Classic earlier this season, losing to both Howard and Santa Clara.
SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS: North Carolina owns a 3-7 overall record, 0-3 in the ACC...have lost to Clemson (1-0), Virginia (2-1 ot) and Duke (6-2)...Carey Talley has a team-high four goals and 12 points...goalkeeper Daniel Popik has played in seven games and has a 2.35 GAA.

CALLING CULLEN: Senior defender Leo Cullen is one of 15 collegiate soccer players to be selected as a candidate for the 12th annual Missouri Athletic Club Sports Foundation Collegiate Player of the Year award. The prestigious crystal soccer ball trophy will be presented on January 9, 1998.
ARMAS IS A "PLAYER TO WATCH": Maryland junior midfielder Steve Armas has been named one of five "Players to Watch" during the 1997 season. He was selected in balloting by approximately 1,100 coaches across the country who also participated in the Missouri Athletic Club voting.
CIROVSKI AT MARYLAND: Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski owns a 51-33-8 record at the helm of the Terp program. Overall, Cirovski's record is 79-45-14 in seven years of coaching.

IN GOAL: Sophomore goalkeeper Andy Kirk, a member of the U.S. U-20 National Team and the World University Games squad, has played in eight matches, missing the Adelphi match because of his committment to the World University Games squad. In eight games, Kirk has allowed seven goals (.835 goals allowed average) and has posted three shutouts. His .835 GAA ranks him second in the ACC.
