Maryland's Cullen and Moore Selected to Umbro All-Star Classic
COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Sixteen seniors, including Maryland defender Leo Cullen, representing 16 different colleges will make up the Elite 16 Men's College Soccer All-Star team at the 1998 Umbro Select Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., January 29-February 1.
The Elite 16 squad includes a total of 11 All-Americans and three of four finalists for the Missouri Athletic Club Sports Foundation Collegiate Player of the Year award. Other MAC finalists joining Cullen is forward Johnny Torres (Creighton) and midfielder Daniel Hernandez (Southern Methodist).
The Elite 16 Men's College All-Star team is comprised of the nation's best seniors as voted on by college coaches in association with National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Other participants on the Elite 16 team are: goalkeepers Matthew Jordan (Clemson) and Jeremy Ransom (Presbyterian), defenders Kevin Daly (St. John's), Joe Franchino (Washington), midfielders Clint Mathis (South Carolina), Billy Walsh (Rutgers), Kevin Quigley (St. Louis), Carey Talley (North Carolina), Chris Klein (Indiana), and forwards Jeff Cunningham (South Florida), and Tyrone Marshall (Florida International).
These talented seniors will exhibit their skills at Lockhart Stadium in a game against the A-League/USISL Select team, comprised of the best players in Division II professional soccer. Kick-off is set for 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31.
Thirty-two other college standouts, including Maryland senior defender R.T. Moore, were also selected to take part in a second all-star game, as the top seniors from Divison I will compete against the top seniors from NCAA Division II, III and NAIA. This game will kick-off just prior to the Elite game at 6 p.m.
