PHILADELPHIA - Maryland once again took center stage as Patrick Mullins and Schillo Tshuma were both selected in the first round of the 2014 Major League Soccer SuperDraft Thursday in Philadelphia.
Mullins was taken 11th overall by New England Revolution. The New Orleans, native captured his second straight MAC Hermann Trophy last weekend. The forward posted 19 goals and eight assists in 2013 while leading Maryland to its second consecutive College Cup. A two-time All-ACC First Team selection, he guided the Terps to second straight ACC regular season and tournament championships as a senior captain. He capped his illustrious career with a remarkable 47 goals and 119 points - both the second highest career tallies in Maryland men's soccer annals.
Tshuma was selected by the Portland Timbers with the 17th overall pick. The forward from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and Alexandria, Va., garnered a coveted Generation adidas contract after tallying 16 goals and three assists in two seasons with the Terrapins. He was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team in 2012 and snagged second team All-ACC honors in 2013. He posted five game-winners during his time in College Park and teamed up with Mullins to form one of the most potent scoring threats in the nation.
"We are very excited for Patrick and Schillo as they take their soccer careers to the next level," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "They are both special people and a coach's dream.
"It has been an absolute privilege to have coached both of them. Terp Nation is excited to follow them in New England and Portland as they embark on the next chapter of their professional careers."
The draft marks the 11th straight season Maryland has boasted at least one selection. It is the fourth straight year the Terps have had at least one player taken in the first round.
The final two rounds of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft will take place on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 via a conference call.
