#2 Terps Tame Tigers Behind Fluharty?s Hat Trick

Box Score

PRINCETON, N.J. – The second-ranked Maryland field hockey team rolled to its seventh straight win Wednesday with an 8-1 rout at Princeton. Senior Maxine Fluharty led the Terrapins' offense with her second career hat trick.

Senior Welma Luus added two goals, while senior Katie Gerzabek, junior Alyssa Parker and freshman Lein Holsboer also scored. The Terps (12-2, 4-1 B1G) outshot the Tigers (3-9), 28-13. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Brooke Cabrera picked up four saves.

"Maryland dealt with the game time change and weather delays (moved two hours earlier due to weather) like professionals in sport," head coach Missy Meharg said. "We are in the midterm exams and presentation phase, so we applaud the women for working hard on and off the field."

Luus opened the scoring 15 minutes in when she carried the ball into the circle and sent a shot into the lower left corner of the cage. With just over a minute left in the first half, Parker picked the ball up off a turnover in the midfield and brought it into the circle to score. She has scored in three straight games for the Terrapins.

After Maryland led 2-0 at the break, Fluharty made it a three-goal lead less than three minutes into the second half when she scored off a high shot. Luus notched her second goal five minutes later off a rebound on a corner.

The Tigers got on the board in the 49th minute when Cat Caro scored off a backhanded shot from Lexi Quirk. Holsboer added Maryland's fifth goal in the 53rd minute off a penalty corner. Just over two minutes later, Gerzabek added another score with a backhanded shot into the right corner of the cage. Fluharty added the Terps' final two goals in the 59th and 63rd minutes off of penalty corners.

Fluharty leads the Terps with 11 goals scored so far this season. Junior Anna Dessoye, who was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday, leads the team in points with 26 points off of seven goals and 12 assists.

The Terrapins will return home this weekend to host Big Ten opponent Rutgers (6-6, 1-4) Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Admission and parking are both free.
